The people shitting on ‘14 Vare don’t appreciate it
25H, take a loan out for what’s coming.
I think when Ketan gets that look in his eye, you just better do what he says.
Love the random Corona on the left, lol. Palate cleanser?
Is H Block the own rooted or something more sinister?
Beta-Jasud notes.
Jasud list v Beta list. How are they managed for allocations?
Per Ketan.
I haven’t crossed that bridge. If you love Beta you’ll love Jasud. Will be down to less vineyards.
Maus got torn out.
When does your Rayas fruit get bottled?
Not enough hours in the day. He has a site but nothing is planted yet.
Pricing question
Own rooted release and how that works? Pricing? Magnum only?
He’s holding pricing for Beta and Jasud.
19’ Jasud vintage, when does this release? Magnum only?
19’ Jasud likely never gets released.
Jasud is still better as a blend then as separate parts. No plan to parcel the vineyard out to separate bottlings yet except Own Rooted.
Current industry issues and how that impacts beta and Jasud sales?
He’s small enough that this isn’t hitting him.
Micro winery permit?
This will happen. A neighbor winery got a micro winery permit so a precident has been set.
Is Jasud influencing a new era or winemakers and farming, Aerika (Julia), Sown, Nacra, etc?
Absolutely not. He’s not doing anything that hasn’t been done before.
Rohit wants to know if you’re ever going to make a pinot.
They’ve looked at it. TBD.
Vineyard sources - anything new
Monticello not going away. Morisoli coming online for Beta.
Own Rooted, August release.
$1K per bottle, 100 bottles, magnum only
Per Ketan: I know I’ll get a lot of blow back for the price. There’s 100 magnums. The wine is this price because it’s twice the effort and wine. Don’t know when this vineyard won’t exist anymore.
He’s lost money not planting regular vines instead of own rooted.
23’ Placida. Not a good fruit set and that’s why there’s less wine for 22’. 23’ is solid. We drank this quick before switching to reds.
Regarding Jasud production from Ketan. Don’t think the vineyard will ever produce more than 1,000 - 1,250 cases
25’ Jasud was 550 cases
Talking about pricing.
There’s not enough places that grow special grapes to forget them. The consumer is not dumb.
Too many quotes to write them and have a fluid conversation without being married to my phone while being engaged with Ketan.
If you’re not gonna hold the wine for 10 years you need to decant 6-8 hours and the wines are always better the next day.
Ketan’s reds are all 100% cab.
We’re trying to show site. I want the place to taste like the place. No blending.
‘22 Monte - I’ll circle back to this.
Vare is such a fickle bitch. It’s the one wine that’s like a roller coaster. It can be different every time you open a bottle.
Black Ridge ‘22 - we enjoyed this wine. You don’t taste the heat at all.
Lupina ‘ - lighter than black ridge.
Maus 22’ - another good one.
Maus getting ripped out. 23’ is last vintage for Beta
‘22 needs 12 hours of air if you want to drink
24’ Monte barrel sample from. Atelier and Mittelberger barrels
We tasted these separate then blended them in glass. Just incredible wine. The Atelier had more spice and the Mittelberger barrel Monty was smoother
Edited to add more notes
23-24-25 Jasud. Drank over 4 hours.
My gawd the perfume on these wines is so surreal and ethereal.
24-25 H Block AKA Own Rooted.
I’ll repeat what I’ve previously said, these are among the best wines I’ve ever tasted. End quote.
The corona wasn’t random. Ketan drank it.
If the offer is received, it will be difficult for me to pass up the own-rooted magnum.
With this said, would completely understand anyone passing at the price.
Great write-up!
Amped for Ketan to work with Morisoli fruit. I didn’t catch which vintage this first comes on line?
@Jeff_M1 Thank you very much for the notes and pictures! Excellent work.
RE: ‘14 Vare. I get the controversy now. The wine is on the green side.
It drank better at pop and pour but just didn’t come around later. Per Ketan, Vare was always the toughest site to figure out. The last Beta Vare vintage was 19’.
I’ll ask him.
'22 Mariana’s??
Absolutely tasty.
Thanks for all the notes @Jeff_M1!
Do you have any more context on the other Beta wines that he’s no longer going to make other than Maus? No more Lupina too? Black Ridge and Glass Rock just one-offs like Paratus was? What will be the last vintage for these?
He noted that someone else got the fruit for one site, I think Paratus. That may be going to Aerika now.
He loves the SCM sites. The only specific one was Maus because the vineyard got sold and the vines were ripped out. I’m guessing that with sourced fruit this is a problem for wineries who don’t want to make a wine that may compete with their own. This is something I talked to Dustin about with the Sauvignon Blanc.
Wonderful notes, what a great trip!! So cool to see Beta barrel-ville, thanks for sharing that.
22’ Monticello notes - drinking a leftover bottle the day after
I’m cheating on my tasting notes as I have a WSET 4 in our group giving me more intricate details.
All black fruit, some cherry notes (cassis). Maybe some black plum. Tannins are still prominant, black brambleberry. Lay this wine sideways or decant for a long long time.
