Napa 2023: What Are Your Must-Have Allocations at Different Price Points?

I did a tasting with Nigel two years ago with a couple friends. We did it in the afternoon preceded by the To Kalon Experience at Mondavi where we had the best of everything they have - Schrader, TWC HWC, Mondavi To Kalon Reserve black bottle, Mt Veeder reserve, I Block and pretty much anything we wanted to taste. It was amazing.

Then we had a nice lunch before heading to Wheeler Farms. The K-E tasting included Asiana SB, Hiero, La Voluese, Rhad and Aneja. The wines were spectacular even compared with what we had earlier. I remember the Hiero drinking really well and the others a big step up in complexity but in need of time. For us they more than lived up to the billing.

From my experience the wines really shine

Editing my list + adding a few more, in bold

  • $100-$200: MOWE, Sown Estate (pricing TBD, but my guess)
  • $200-$250: MACDONALD, Nacra Estate (pricing TBD, but my guess)
  • $250+: Bergman, AERIKA Prologue (pricing TBD, but my guess), Grace Family ‘Cornelius Grove’/’Estate’
  • $500+: Scarecrow (TBD as I did not buy ‘22)

Don’t forget about Corison Kronos and their new Rutherford bottle. Both have gotten great scores from Vinous, and have the track record of aging better than most in the valley.

$165 for Sown Estate I think.

I’ll buy and store your MacD when you’re ready to move on next year

Lol yeah that along with Jasud and Mascot will survive the cut

I’m expanding into Bordeaux, who/what are you buying to compete?

Leoville Barton, Leoville Poyferre, Pichon Lalande and Pichon Baron, Montrose, Canon, Les Carmes Haut Brion, and VCC whenever I can are my usual regular buys. I stopped buying EP two years ago though. A good bit of BDX is available now and ready to drink. Lots of other chateaux to choose from as well. Those are just a few I have been buying regularly. Forgot to add Lynch-Bages as well.

I highly recommend going to a local BDX tasting at a wine shop or event to taste the wines before buying as well.

Will definitely buy these but am open to other suggestions and have jumped on a lot of list over the past 12 months.

Under $100: Nickel & Nickel

$100-200: Mayacamas

$200+: Heitz Martha’s Vineyard

I may be wrong here but I thought Heitz lost access to Martha’s vineyard fruit?

No, they just gave up their exclusive access.

They did not take 100% of it but they still have access

Correct- they gave up exclusive access. I believe that starts with the upcoming harvest as well.
