2003 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/23/2013)
WOTN. This was an exceptional grenache experience. So well balanced. Light on its feet but not thin. Complex but not cloying. Mature red cherries, some black fruit and a minerality that brought it all together. Love the slight barnyard nose but the fruit was pristine and laser focused. Exceptional wine. Maybe one of my favorites of the year. Couldn’t get enough of this one. (98 pts.) -
2007 Kapcsandy Family Winery Estate Cuvée State Lane Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville (7/18/2013)
This is close to as good as it gets. Multi layered cherry and red fruit. Sweet, well intergrated, but not cloying. Just an absolute pleasure. May get better but who cares. Bravo Lou! (97 pts.) -
2006 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley (7/14/2013)
This is one of those syrahs you justwont forget. Big and bold. Descriptors wouldn’t do it justice. Try next in 5 years. Plenty of time left on this baby. (98 pts.) -
2004 Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietor Grown - USA, California, Napa Valley (6/15/2013)
May be the best cab of the year. Decanted for 2.5 hours. Amazing purity of fruit. Lots of blueberry and black cherry. You knew you were drinking something special. Slightly oaked but not in the way. Great mouth coating juice. Especially tasty in the mid palate. (96 pts.) -
1961 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (4/16/2013)
Spectacular nose, mature red cherry. Still very young looking in color. The wine has a steely taste on entry but it blew off as the night went on. On the palate, mature cherry, silky tannins with a firm backbone that took the wine from front to back of palate. Hints of cedar, oak and loam but not in the way. Great long finish. Great long finish. No sediment. Started to fade in the second hour. One of those wines I will always remember where, who and why we drank it. The generosity of wine friends always amazes me and the whole night was one in which each participant brought something they wanted to share. (98 pts.) -
2003 Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Thorevilos - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/16/2013)
Very serious wine. Minerality was amazing as was the purity of fruit. Tasted like the Latour of Napa. Powerful dark red cherry. A profound wine with a masculine muscle. (98 pts.) -
1994 Harlan Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/16/2013)
Smooth and silky. Rich cherry pie with some Rutherford dusty tannins. Ch Margaux of Napa. Sweet fruit, more feminine. (97 pts.) -
1997 Clarendon Hills Astralis - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon (4/13/2013)
When I read my lat note from a few years back, it was a total mirror image except the coffee notes and smokiness had settled down and were not part of the flavor profile. Great acidity in the wine delivered blueberry , black cherry and some cinnamon. No apparent heat. Time has done this wine proud. For me, in the peak drinking window for the next few years. I would call this a Muhamed Ali wine, “floats like a butterfly but stings like a bee.” WOTN (96 pts.) -
2007 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (3/29/2013)
May be one of the best chards ever. Gorgeous lemon oil and vanilla undertones. Great mouthfeel, some lemon oil and awesome body. Heavy weight but light on its feet. Memorable. (97 pts.) -
1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru (3/29/2013)
First bottle was dead, with below shoulder fill. Second bottle was low neck and it was gorgeous. Nose of cherry, strawberry and forest floor. On palate, just splendid mix of roasted strawberry, raspberry and sweet cherry. It all came together like a symphony of earth and fruit. Extremely memorable . (96 pts.)
