Must see movie for foodies -- julie and julia

Just saw a screening of Julie and Julia. Wonderful movie.
I thought I knew about Julia Childs but didn’t know that much.
Streep should get another Oscar nomination for this.

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the movie. I was a little unsure about the previews but I’m still really looking forward to seeing it.

We are going to a screening on tuesday…really looking forward to it. [dance-clap.gif]

This one is pretty high on our hit list this summer.

Thanks for the early thoughts. We rarely go to the movies but said we want to see this.

Jason

This won’t spoil anything for you but…

We were curious as to whether they would show the SNL Akroyd bit where he is Julia and cuts his hand.
They did have it in the movie and the “younger” people in the audience didn’t pick up it was SNL and Akroyd.

See if this happens when you see the movie.

I have been “so hoping” to see crazy foodies like us would write positive comments about this movie. I’m going for sure, now!

Thanks, Ted. How are all of you seeing this before the release next month? Sneak previews or trade showings?

I can’t wait to see this movie.

If I hadn’t made plans to see it with someone, I would hope for a sneak preview to come out. Oh well, I guess I’ll wait until the end of the month.

We have a “public” movie theater (theatre now) - The Bryn Mawr Theatre which was a very nice “old” movie house which was going to close and be turned into a Gap or something. The public got together and purchased it and it is now basically a foundation operated mostly by membership, grants and donations. The do have first run movies — not stuff like Transformers or Twilight. But they also have seminars, old classics and free screenings for members. This was one of the screenings. Sometimes they have the writer, producer or stars. I saw Bottle Shock at Bryn Mawr at a screening with one of the producers who spoke about the film.

Great thing to do when the community gets together to support film. More info here:

We saw a screening last night and absolutely loved it! Although I am not her biggest fan, Meryl Streep was brilliant !
The entire cast was first rate and I am hoping the movie does well in a mainstream manner beyond the normal “foodie” network.

Cheers!

I absolutely loved it, too. Engaging and humorous! Having never seen Julia Childs on t.v., I had no idea what an utterly delightful and charming woman she was. Or how tall!! I was totally enthralled with Julia’s persona, the story, and Meryl Streep’s performance, and now I am anxious to join Netflix to find some old Julia Child’s cooking episodes. What fun! IMHO, this movie is a must see for every foodie and/or Meryl Streep fan. Enjoy!

My wife and I must have seen all the old “French Chef” episodes on PBS back in the 1970’s, and I probably have all of Julia’s various cookbooks – so it was probably a sure thing that we would like this movie.

I liked it even better than I expected. The movie “Doubt” starred the same 2 actresses – Amy Adams was the young nun and Meryl Streep the older nun.

At any rate I thought the acting was quite good and the story was wonderful. In another topic I mentioned that we cooked a meal from “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and went to the movie on Saturday August 15 which was Julia Child’s birthday.

I, too, loved the movie but thought it was an A- rather than an A+, the reason being I found the “Julie” parts a bit distracting. Sure, the movie was based on the book about this woman blogging her cooking of Julia’s recipes, but what really was great about the movie was Streep “channeling” Julia Child, and the great stories of Julia, her husband, and friends. It was always, to me, just slightly jarring switching to Julie and I kept wanting the Julie segments to get over with so we could go back to Julia. I notice no comments above really focus or talk about Julie even though that’s probably 1/2 the movie.

Streep is a genius. She was perfect as Julia. Oh, also I would have enjoyed more about Julia’s life in her later years as well. That’s, I guess, for a sequel.

We saw it last week when it opened here. I rather liked Amy Adams part and the way the whole thing worked together. I think it was a tougher role given the fact that very few people knew who Julie Powell was before this movie.

I haven’t heard from anyone who was even aware of the blog, the book, or the woman comment on the overall screenplay, but as much a fan as I am of JC, I went in with an open mind hoping that it wouldn’t be a one sided script and I didn’t think it was afterward.

I agree Mark – I personally don’t think a movie JUST about Julia Child’s life could have been quite as good as this. And Julie’s adoration of Julia Child probably helps some people (who barely know who Julia was) understand the Julia scenes better. I did read the NY Times article (the one mentioned in the movie) and I was aware of her blog while she was writing it. So I knew about both Julia and Julie.

I suppose I also found Amy Adams really intriguing to watch, those big eyes and cute face. A little gratuitous nudity would have been OK with me… but you can’t have everything I guess.

The wife and I loved the “Julia” part, did not like the “Julie” part. I’d pay to see the two hour version of the former. The latter just became annoying after a while.

Chris, our local San Diego PBS station has the Cooking with Julia and Jacques series running on Saturday afternoons. Check you local listings, or check on YouTube for excerpts. This past Saturday they ran a very funny epidsode revolving around sandwiches. Jacques wanted wine with his sandwich and Julia insisted upon beer! The show was from 1999, so she was advanced in years and still charming.

Nice story, weak ending. Thought Amy Adams was very good, thought Meryl Streep was off the charts and Stanley Tucci doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his work anywhere, but especially in this thread. Eric annoyed me and I can’t tell if it was the actor or the character - or both. His table manners were atrocious.

Couldn’t tell you. Went yesterday. It was Senior Monday and everyone but my daughter and me had a walker.

How is that possible?
