Mostly CdPs from last night

These were tasted blind.

1989 Clos du Mont Olivet - Cloudy and browning, not very good.
1989 Beaucastel - Full of brett, disappointing bottle.
1990 Bosquet des Papes Chantemerle - OK but on the downside of prime.
1995 Vieux Telegraphe - Good wine but nothing more than that.
1998 Vieux Telegraphe - Drinking really well now. This wine was closed for such a long time. Just beautiful now.
1998 Beaucastel - Another very good '98. Not as developed as the VT. Should still get better.
1999 Pegau - My WOTN. great aromatics and perfect balance.
2000 Charvin - Reticent. Should be showing more at this age.
1999 Mordoree Reine des Bois - Big wine, tropical notes. Different style but very good.
2001 Clos des Papes - Best vintage of Clos des Papes I’ve tasted. Coming along nicely.
2003 Clos des Papes - One of the worst vintages of Clos des Papes I’ve tasted.
2001 Grand Veneur Les Origines - Very ripe fruit, not a lot of structure. This one surprised me.
2000 Caillou Les Quartz - Gorgeous wine. This was in the flight with 01 Clos des Papes and I was two-fisting these wines. Love it!
2007 Beaucastel - Certainly one of the good 2007s I’ve tried. I would buy this one.
2003 Pegau - Very young but showing promise. One of the few '03s I like.
SQN Just for the Love of It - Certainly stuck out with these wines. It’s SQN at its best.

dayng! nice night of drinking! [welldone.gif]

what were your top two wines of the night?

99 Pegau followed closely by 01 Clos des Papes and 00 Caillou Quartz. I’ve got a lot of CdP between '98 and '01 vintages that I need to start drinking because some of these are really busting out now.

Funny how those 99s are showing so well. Always loved that ‘underrated’ vintage.
Funny how Pegau just kicks everything else in the a$$ so often.

Was the Caillou Quartz a bit too much on the new worldy side? I’ve found some to be just too sticky-sweet and vanilla.

nice lineup for sure.

best,

Doug

I almost hate to ask, but you didn’t happen to get the lot number on the 03 Clos des Papes, did you? As I recall, there seemed to be quite a bit of variation from lot to lot.

Doug, not at all. I haven’t had new vintages but back then they were raising the grenache (85%) in old foudres and the 15% syrah saw new oak.

Jeff, no clue to lot number but I’ve never liked the wine and I’ve had it from multiple sources.

Interesting notes, thanks. Too bad about the '89 Beau - that can be a killer CdP.

But I agree with you.

Great notes. What surprised you about the Grand Veneur???

I recently had an insanely bad bottle of the 89 Beau. Just flat out unpleasant.

Anyone notice that Hedonist’s Gazette link to a CDP and Sushi night? That line up must have pummeled the food.

The ripeness on the wine, the wood, and the lack of structure. I prefer their regular bottling.

I have a 98 VT on the chopping block. Cannot wait.
