Most incongruous wine find (DRC RC in a supermarket)

I’d at least find out the prices?

The old Columbus Circle Wines had a similar dichotomy. The register on the left side of the store had people buying small bottles of whiskey and lottery tickets. The register on the right side of the store had people buying Pinon, Selosse, and Ogier.

That was a great store.

In 2005, we were vacationing in Manhattan, and we went into a convenience store and in a glass case behind the counter was a 375ml of 1997 Opus One, for I think around $90 or so. We had never had Opus One, so we bought it and had it at the hotel room that night.

I remember thinking it was very big and rich, and even sharing a 375 we got a little tired of it by the end.

Then there was the time I was chatting with the wine and spirits guy at my market in 2017 and he bragged he could get me anything. I said then get me some Pappy but I apologize in advance when the rep laughs in your face. Six months later he called out of the blue and said I’ve got your Pappy come by sometime to get it. I said I’ll be there in 5 minutes.

Wow! A buddy of mine is a Pappy fan. Total Wine used to send out an email to their top tier club members when Pappy was available. I think this happened once per year. My buddy was an executive at the time (now retired) and he is sitting in a business meeting, mid day, during the week, when his phone pings. He checks and sure enough it was the email from Total Wine. He stood up, says “I am sorry, but I have to leave” and walks out. He drives to Total Wine and as he parks his car he sees other 50-60 year old men running from their cars to the doors of Total Wine. He does the same and got his bottle.

Sounds like it has your name on it. I’d hop to it. champagne.gif

Lots of fakes there. They’ve been around for a long time. But also some real random stuff.

Lots of stuff there. They’ve been long time buyers as the son and father are huge wine collectors. They are also on the top 5 list of people owed from Premier Cru.

As high value as their wine is- their scotch collection is the real deal. People have been trying to pry some of that away for a long time but they aren’t that interested in selling.

I remember seeing old McCallan possibly from the 20s at the Chinatown location. Big money back then but would fetch insane amount now.

Michael, I bought a bottle of '47 Cheval from the same place which I rated 100 points two days later when I drank it. Who knows what lies those cauldrons.

I should have put “vending machine” in quotes obviously. Just CDG.

Yeah, they have a LOT of Macallan fine and rare

The City Market wine shop in West Vail had DRC, Cayuse Bionic Frog, and Screaming Eagle, among many others, this past summer.

I also bought some '13 Soldera at my Kroger last year.

Im thinking Total Wine marks those up some. The best part of my story is I paid retail and walked out with those 6 bottles for around $750

Here are some photos of Hawaii’s collection from a few years ago…

Lots and lots of signed magnums and virtually any big name bottle I could think of at the time. The whisky selection was really for people after the classic big name distilleries and hype bottles of present. There wasn’t much in the way of cask strength indie bottles. It’s definitely a collection built on names and status without much for people who see beyond that (not that some of those hype bottles and classic names aren’t amazing).

You’d think so, but they actually don’t mark it up. At least they didn’t a couple years ago. The Grand Reseve tier received a special login and they basically had a ‘Whiskey drop’ on a certain day at a certain time. I was able to snag a Pappy 15 for like $90 if I remember correctly. I was pretty pumped about it [cheers.gif]

in a local restaurant once bought a 2001 DRC Montrachet for about $300, drove to Wine Ex, and sold it for $3500. Now when I eat there, I feel like it’s free.

It’s an amazing wine. I would take the opportunity to drink another bottle over free food for a decade.
