most compact way to store wine under the stairs

Thanks again for the suggestion! I dove in and bought 200 to start and will go back for more once I see how they fit and how many more I need. Anything I should now about installing is welcome.

Cheers

Capital idea! I think this might work well for closets too

In the past, I found a company that made an enclosure to fit under stairs covered by drywall. Temperature controlled with racking and a glass door.
Likely, not the cheapest method, but if you plan to stay a while, worth looking for.

Like you I store my low value / short term bottles under my stairs. Under my stairs is a closet on concrete slab in the middle of the house so the temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much. I bought 3 of the racks similar to the ones in the links below and made 2 racks out of them 9 rows high instead of 6. Each row holds a case so the two racks hold 18 cases total. I haven’t stained or painted them as they are out of sight but could be done. I would have gone another direction if they were visible.

As they say in the instructions, buy a rubber mallet. You push the metal pieces into the plastic pieces, some gloves help, and once you get the hang of it it goes quickly. Then you bang them in with the mallet until flush, turn it over and bang a bit more. I was pleasantly surprised how well they fit and how “square” the rack was. They say that over a certain height you should anchor to a wall for stability, perhaps ?ten, but mine were not that high. And once the wine is in, the bottle weight makes the rack very stable.
