ABOUT THE VINEYARDS:

The Moshin Estate has blossomed to a total planted acreage of 25 acres situated on various parcels on Westside Road in the Russian River Valley - nestled between the renowned Gary Farrell and William Selyem wineries. This prime location is ideal for growing premium grapes and crafting exceptional wines within this prestigious viticultural region. History of Moshin Vineyards HERE

Moshin Estate Vineyard – this is the original 10-acre vineyard that Rick acquired and began farming in 1989. Soil types include river alluvial fan with deep, loamy soils that are rich in nutrients from occasional winter flooding. Clonal selections vary and include Pommard, Martini, Swann, Wädenswil, Calera and Dijon 777 & 115

Calliope Vineyard - Introducing Calliope Vineyard, a 2.5-acre estate parcel planted in 2005 during the construction of Moshin Winery. Located in the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, its southern exposure and Goldridge soil provide an optimal environment for crafting world-class Pinot Noir. The vineyard boasts a selection of clones, including Pommard and Wädenswil - 2A.

Rosalina Vineyard - This 5.5-acre estate parcel was planted in 2007 through a partnership with a dear friend, passionate restaurateur, and a true “Burgundy-hound.” Mirroring the orientation and soil type of the Calliope Vineyard, this sister vineyard surprises with how a single clone and two years of vineyard age can shape its unique character. Experience the distinct influence of Calera, Pommard, and Wädenswil - 2A clones in this exceptional vineyard.

Some friends and I had the chance to taste some of the wines offered from Moshin, the 21 Chenin Blanc, the 18 Westside Crossing, and the 2019 Estate Pinot

21 Chenin Blanc - lovely color, aromas of lemon and grapefruit, crisp and tasty with a little citrus and some mineral flavors. Would be a great summer wine for evenings on the patio / deck. Drink now. This was my favorite of the 3 we tasted.

18 Westside Crossing - pretty good representation of a RRV Pinot. Cherry, spice, maybe a little cola. Really good QPR. Drink now

19 Estate Pinot - similar to the Westside Crossing but with more structure and elegance. Cherry, some baking spices, and a touch of black/blue fruit on the end. Drink now or buy a few and hold a couple for the next 5-10 years to watch them develop as I feel this could improve over that time frame.

I’ve been a fan of Moshin PN for over a decade. Great people, too!

I tasted Moshin alongside @Jon_Martin. Of course he made us cook him dinner and entertain him all night. He’s such a diva!

Anyways my notes were left at home and Todd is on me to get something posted so I reserve the right to edit this for more specifics details when I get home.

First thanks Todd and Moshin for the opportunity

21’ Chenin Blanc- Have to be honest I don’t have enough experience with this grape to know how varietally correct it is. I can say that this was my favorite of the three. Lower alcohol, clear pale yellow. Found the fruit to be of a more tropical nature. Enough fruit where you almost think sweet but it absolutely isn’t. Just those bright flavors hitting your nose and telling your palette to be prepared for sweet but its clean and finishes easy not one of those acid bombs that pulls the enamel off your teeth. A drink now wine but instead of a sunny patio pull it on a cool, gray and rainy day and let the flavors take you to the tropical sunny island where we would all rather be.
Glad to see they offered this in its own 3 pack, the kind of white I think a lot of Berserkers are searching for in the land of all these reds being offered.

18 Westside Crossing- Pinot is not a strong suit for me. And to me this one seemed pretty in line with what I find a lot of CA pinots are. Black cherry/darker notes not the bright red fruits and not candied or sweet. Some cola, easy drinking nothing that stood out… It actually wasn’t until day 2 when I tried the leftover wine (8-10oz) that had been sitting out in a decanter that I think it hit its stride. It reminded me somewhat of a Loring or Sandler where it had that juicy fruitiness and enough acid so that it keeps drawing you back in and there’s no point in setting the glass down because you’re just going to pick it right back up. Before you know it the glass is empty. A drink now wine with a decant or follow it over a day or two.

19 Estate Pinot- Darker in color, more brooding in the glass. Again with the darker fruits on the palette. This one was the tighter and probably meant for midterm aging or longer. Whole cluster, stem inclusion I cant say, could have just been me, nobody else in the group found that note but It got me thinking maybe this was just too young or needed a lengthy decant. Unfortunately I didn’t save any for day 2 because I really wonder how it may have evolved? Of the two Pinots my simple palette preferred the Westside.

I hope this helps. I am not a note writer. These wines were all well made and priced accordingly, I hope more folks familiar with Moshin will also post their recs.

Happy Berserker Day and Welcome aboard!

I got together with friends to taste the three wines in Amber’s second offering here.

The 2021 Chenin Blanc was every taster’s favorite. I usually shy away from any Chenin Blanc from California, but my prejudice is probably born from a bad bottle of grocery store wine from graduate school. If you had poured this for me, I probably would’ve thought it originated in the Loire. I’ve never had a wine from Solano County before, and a little research tells me its just East of Napa. We found it bright, fresh, and with subtle minerality. It improved as it warmed up. I’d suggest serving around cellar temp. This bottle punches well above it’s price point, and three bottles for $85.50 is a steal.

The 2019 Moshin Vineyards Estate PN was very nice. It was complex, with nice mouthfeel, and more subtle black fruits. We tasted it several times over 90 minutes directly from the bottle, and it opened up around the one-hour mark. I’d suggest at least a splash decant on this one. Our tasting group fought a little bit over who got to take the leftover of this one home. I won, and it was even better three hours after we opened it.

The 2018 Westside Crossing PN was much less complex than the Estate PN, and no one was surprised to learn that it was Russian River Valley fruit. The flavor profiles were typical of wines form that region. We all agreed that “Strawberry Sweet Tarts” was the best description here.

These guys know what they’re doing. I wish they had more of this stuff. I am very interested in their single vineyard stuff offered here which we didn’t get a chance to taste.
