I have almost entirely stuck to my buying hiatus. 9 of the bottles this month were the last of my BerserkerDay purchases trickling in.
I did buy one bottle, but I think it’s defensible. I bought a 2020 Galatrona at a nice wine dinner I was invited to by a friend. I didn’t have to pay a dime to taste a huge array of Super Tuscans (including Ornellaia and Sassicaia) as well as a nice Italian dinner. The wines we tried were for sale afterwards and I thought it would be kind of rude not to buy anything seeing as I was an invited guest and enjoyed everything free of charge. So I bought one bottle. I’m sure the hosts still lost money on me…
My initial reaction was this April would be a great month for this monthly updated, until I realized I ordered 2025 Julian Haart wines - April:
In: 13
Out: 15
Total April: -2
Have perhaps 2-3 (?) planned buys for rest for the year. Now it’s all about resisting temptations and curiosity. Or alt least to keep those excursions moderate.
I believe what Dave posted is correct. Your experience just means you are less sensitive, but still somewhat. We had a person in a tasting group who seemed to be truly insensitive, and he often found that the wines we called as corked were good, and sometimes the best of all. He didn’t have a bad palate in general. It happened often enough that I became convinced of the effect Wes/Dave described. I believe there’s legit science that backs it up too.
I hope to see a reduction of around 750 bottles in May if buyers in the current round of Spectrum auctions help me out. Offered up a lot of California wines including several WB favorites.
