Monday Night Bordeaux: 2 From the 80's

This is from dinner last Monday with the boys…Sans spouses, partners etc we made ourselves a nice little meal and enjoyed a couple of eighties bordeaux.

Aperitif/with asparagus & shallot salad:
2008 Vouvray Sec Domaine Pichot Couteau de la Biche
Really nice dry Vouvray! Floral and fruity nose and steely dry with some white stone fruit on the palate. The bottle we consumed had a $12.99 price sticker. I want more…

With pot roast ala ‘Jar’:
1985 St. Julien Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou
Great fill. Nice tobacco and dark red fruits on the nose. On the palate good fruit and some mild tannins. Great with pot roast but not a great wine. Very good to Excellent.

With cheese course:
1981 St. Emilion Chateau Figeac
This was very unexpected. The last time I had this wine 6 or 7 years ago it seemed pretty much dead, and I had never had any bottle that was very pleasurable. Where’s that happy-face smiley rising from the casket?
Great fill. Gave it about 5 hours of air in the bottle. Elegant, light, ethereal body. Lovely light red fruit. To me it seemed a qualitatively better wine experience then the Ducru, which was surprising. Excellent.
