Mondavi Reserve 2001 magnums--not so good

This wine does not taste good. I have tasted wines like this many times, I can’t name the fault, but it does not taste good. It tastes like some older wines and I don’t like. Someone please open one up and describe the taste, it is so familiar, yet I can’t put words to it. Definitely not my type of wine.

Is this Reserve?

Otto, is the word you are seeking … [bleh.gif] shitty?

Guys, I’m serious. The wine does not smell correct. It does smell like some older wines, I just can’t put my finger on it to describe it. But I know the smell very well.

If you bought a case or two, you should think about opening a bottle.

Otto, there are only a few malfunctions of a quality wine. Storage/ cooked, TCA/corked, VA, premature decline. Any of those hit home here?

C’mon Jack, I know all the faults, just can’t get this one. Yet I get this with a lot of older wines.

a few people from ebob popped these with no issue

was this from drink the grapes or a similar deal, I am hoping this was an isolated incident

drinkthegrapes.com I have no beef in this other than letting people know.
Maybe that some people actually like this off smell/taste. Like I said, it smells like some of the older wines that I do not enjoy, but other people rave about that.

We opened one of these over the holidays. The bottle we had was drinking fine. No flaws noticed.
Maybe you got a bad bottle.

Otto…Come on up to the OC, we can drink one of mine out of a 750.

Some older wines get that “corky cork” smell to them.

It’s not TCA - it’s more of a spongy, rotten, gunky cork smell.

And of course there’s the possibility of heat damage - heat damage can make a wine smell like just about anything [rotten eggs, stewed tomatoes, sickly-sweet cabbage, etc].

You nailed it Nathan. It’s that corky smell, but not the TCA. That’s exactly what it is. I big turnoff for me. This morning the wine smells the same. [bleh.gif]

Well hopefully it was just a single, isolated bad cork, and not an entire batch of bad corks.

I think I mentioned corked otto, didn’t I???

I just did not want to give you credit Jack. You know a Righty v Lefty thing! [tease.gif]

Geez Otto, I don’t even post their anymore. It’s all yours now. [tease.gif]

If you’re talking about that “musty old wine cellar” ness…I LOVE THAT IN CAB! Not tca, but some might think it is…reminds me of being in some old cellars in Napa. Dusty, leathery, dirt spice…Mmmmmm. I get that a lot in older BV’s, as well as Mondavi and Beringer.

That’s the smell Brian. And I know that some people love it, however I can’t stand it. I also get this in some older Italian wines. I attened some OL where people would rave over this type of nose and I would be like WTF! headbang
