Mixed Bag

  • 2005 Mollydooker Shiraz The Boxer - Australia, South Australia, McLaren Vale / Padthaway (2/10/2010)
Am very suprised at how this is ageing. The nose is a 94-95 points with the oak not fully integrated. The taste as expected was a bit heavy with minimal nuance and big flavors. I didn’t get to drink but a few sips as it disappeared (the partygoers loved it). Tiresome after a glass or two? Maybe? I’ll find out next time. (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Calera Chardonnay Mount Harlan - USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan (2/10/2010)
Day 1 this Chardonnay was good (half bottle drank); Day 2 it was excellent. Stylish, all the components were in balance. (92 pts.)
  • 2004 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau (2/10/2010)
This is an excellent Cotes du Rhone Rasteau. Easily has a couple more years. Definetly my bargain of the year at $5.99 closeout. Hid its 14.5% alchohol well. Glad I bought the case without testing. (90 pts.)
  • 2006 Laurent Martray Brouilly “Corentin” - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly (2/10/2010)
Bright cherry fruits with crisp acidity, this bottle is at it’s peak. It is a delight to drink. One hour after opening it was singing with the fruit, acidity and mineral component all in balance. 4 hours later it was very drinkable but lost nuance. Day 2 it was ok. I’m so glad I discovered non-Georges Duboeuf Cru Beaujolais in the $18-$30 range. (90 pts.)

This is my favorite Mollydooker quote from Cellartracker:

“I think Parker got it right. This may be the greatest value wine in the world. Drinking very well right now and just delicious. Hasn’t changed much over the last couple of years.”

Holla!
