Mike Smith Carneros Syrahs

I have really enjoyed the Hudson Syrah from Bedrock and have decided I should try some Myriad or Quivet Syrah from the same region. What are the differences between the Esther block and Hulda block bottlings? If you have tried all of these, how does the Mike Smith Syrahs compare to the Bedrock?

The Myriad is clone 174 and Quivet clone 300. I find the Myriad to be black fruit driven and heavy in black olive notes. The Quivet tends to be more structured with a savory nose, black fruit and meaty notes.

Brian hit it.

I have nothing to add other than the 2012 Quivet Syrahs are off the chain redonk.

I am loyal Mike Smith wine patron though I don’t buy so much Syrah any more. But I have a wine snob friend who raves about Northern Rhone Syrah. He thought the Myriad alas Madres was the closest California wine to a French Rhone. I don’t know enough about the French stuff to opine myself.

Well, the budwood cuttings came from Hermitage, so…

Brian, that’s very interesting.

Other than a couple N. Rhone tastings and a few sporadic bottles, I have little experience with Hermitage. And I generally dislike Syrah, just not my favorite flavor profile. But god damn, Mike just makes a profound wine out of the Syrah grape…I would be very interested to know which producers “supplied” the cuttings.

Supplied? You jest!

Hartman and/or American Tourister.

Oh you guise

Suggest they try the Failla Hudson, it had a French wine shop owner ask if it was Hermitage when I blinded him on it, he bought a case.
