MFP and TRB in NYC

Mike “Friggin” Pobega hosted Thomas Rivers Brown in New York City tonight and it was fantastic. Mike’s cool, Thomas’ cool and the wines were fantastic. I’ll wait for a sober person to post notes but in the meantime, wet your whistle while you wait for notes on Rivers-Marie, Outpost, Maybach, Schrader and more. Awesome evening. Thanks, Mike and Thomas for a lovely evening.

I don’t even have to wait for the notes to tell you I’m already jealous.

I think you have a loooooonnnnngggggg wait ahead of you! [foilhat.gif]

I didn’t even realize this was going down. Hoping for some highlights everyone!

What a great evening. I have yet to put my notes together, but can say that all of the wines were amazing. Having Thomas there to speak of his wines while tasting them alongside a great dinner was just the big bonus and the CLONYC group was surely honored. Thomas is humble, fun loving, unassuming and obviously very learned in his field. It was a very laid back evening that will be difficult to match going forward. I am just not quite sure who invited Ben though… [gen_fro.gif]
(No cancelations or drop outs. I wonder why?) [good.gif]

The wines were:
2007 Outpost Grenache
2007 Maybach Eterium Chardonnay
2007 Rivers-Marie Thieriot Chardonnay
2007 Rivers-Marie Summa Pinot Noir
2007 Rivers-Marie Summa Old Pinot Noir
2007 Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2007 Rivers-Marie Occidental Pinot Noir
2007 Rivers-Marie Willow Creek Pinot Noir
2006 Maybach Materium Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Schrader CCS Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Schrader To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Schrader T-6 Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Schrader Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Outpost “True Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Rivers-Marie Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Outpost Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Tamber Bey Cabernet Sauvignon Sauvignon
2006 Diamond Terrace Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Two Hands Charlie’s Patch Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes will follow, at least for the Cabs. I am sure others will do better with the Pinot notes but I can say the 2007 Rivers-Marie Occidental PN was phenomenal.

Thanks all for a great evening.
*Cheryl, my middle name is Frank so imagine my surprise seeing MFP in the title of this thread! I thought you clairvoyant!

Mike,

Great job putting this together. It was an honor and real pleasure to finally meet TRB, I’ve had email conversations with him for years, but to get to sit down and drink with him and pick his brain was an unreal treat.

The wines were really great. I loved the R-M Chardonnay. The R-M Old Vines Summa was my favorite Pinot of the night, but the Occidental may turn out to be the best with time. The Schrader BTK was my favorite cab, it lacked nothing, probably as pure a wine as I’ve ever enjoyed. It was the essence of Cal Cab. The Schrader CCS, Geo III and the Maybach were all contenders for my second/third place finishers.

I also really enjoyed the Diamond Terrace, Outpost “True” and the Tamber Bey at it’s price point ($60ish) was really good.

It was great having a private room, so nice and cozy. I had such a great time, thanks so much for organizing. BTW - the booklets were really cool too. I want to see some pics soon.

I bet everyone wants to know how much the 07 Schraders wll be huh? [gen_fro.gif] [gen_fro.gif]

Well done guys. This looks awesome.

Really bummed that I couldn’t make this gig.

It would be interesting to know Mike. Please spill the beans

What’s the over/under on $175 a bottle?

Still composing notes.
Heres a snapshot or two…

The 2006 Schrader ToKalon is amazing.
The 2006 Maybach Materium is as well. This is a must purchase. If you gotta skimp this year, don’t do it here.

Tamber Bey and Diamond Mountain are well worthseeking out. Beautiful wines with a fair pricetag.
The Diamond Terrace was the darkest fruited of the night. Wow.
Both th Outpost Cabs were pure and deep. A fanastic buy buy.

All of the other Schraders were similiar in styling. Big and bold but graceful, Schraders trademark beauty point.

I had asked Thomas about the Jones Family wines going forward. He is very excited about the site and its sun kissed position and feels he can truly continue on nicely as well as grow both bottlings. I am a fan of Jones as was sure glad to hear it. 2008 will be his first there.

If you’re a fan of Napa Cabs and not giddy about the abundance of amazing wines out there it’s time to go back to stamp collecting because we are truly in our ‘golden’ era. I am very giddy. Just look at my smile above.

Glad you still like the Maybach’s Mike. I just got shipping notice for my six. What cellaring do you think is appropriate for the wine?

How long does it take to walk from the FedEx truck to the front door?

I know your ugly mug already Mike (and Ben S. & Mark F. as well) but could you put some names to the faces in those pics?

Thanks.

Jack, 2-4 years or a 5 hour decant.
It should be fine to 8-10 years
As if the stuff ever lasts that long in my cellar…

I’ll have to have you up to my Casa to help me drink some of mine. I can’t seem to get to them for over 10 years. Too much damn Frenchie.
