Mexico Trip: Sayulita & Mexico City 2024

Just fired up plonk. Esquina Comun is sadly closed for the holidays. Contramar increasingly hard to snag a table

For Contramar, just send them a WhatsApp message before their reservation book opens. They reply immediately.

Plonk is really good. Romi is the GM. She can steer you to some nice wines, mostly natural.

We just showed up around lunch opening on a weekday and got right in at contramar, I’m sure there are a bunch of other similar spots but we figured we’d try our luck at the famous one.

This worked, thanks!

Have you been to Masala y Maiz? I think I recommended it to you in the past. So great.

Yes we went in June, was fantastic. We have a tight turnaround so the shlep is a bit tough. Might still be able to turn it around.

Does Vigneron allow reservations for tables that will just drink wine? We were thinking of nightcapping it before some bars and wanted to know if anyone’s done this. I can, of course, reach out to them…Just wanted to query the hive mind.

Mods por favor please homogenize the CDMX posts!

Quick recap from an excellent trip.

  • Maleza continues to be a favorite cafe for its inventive small bites, great cocktail program, and increasingly strong wine list. We stopped in for a snacky and some spirits

  • Contramar is kind of off my list now. Feels old hat. Still has a spirit and festive energy but it’s largely lazy swag gringos. The mezcal list has gotten a lot less affordable, wines by the glass are bleh, and waiters are a bit heavy handed either the upsell interludes. The truly inventive dishes )tuna tostada, whole fish rub) are still tasty but somewhat commoditized globally. Victim of your own success I guess.

  • Vigneron was super dope. A very romantic / chill vibe. We drank Rossignol.

  • Limantour is out. Straight cash grab, cocktail quality has gone down. Lot of attractive people tho…

  • Comal Oculto was a revelation. Reminds me a lot of the quality of say Michelin starred Oxomoco in Brooklyn at 1/3 the price? Will be my new post Chapultepec brunch spot.

  • Maiz y Masala. Great again. Prices have inched up a bit more and it’s effectively US prices but still such a great meal.

  • Bar Loup. Really fine curated hipster French wine list. We drank Robinot at what felt like 2019 prices. List had Ganevat, Souhat, Octavin, etc…

  • Taco Sin Nombre quite tasty but maybe a bit worst qpr and lower meat quality than I recall. Maybe I’ve gotten bougie.

  • Qūentin is still dialed in. Pour over beans aren’t the best but the lattes are.

No Plonk?

nexnext time…Esquina Comun too!

We will probably have time top hit one of Loup Bar or Plonk; did you have a preference?

Both were very good, I would give the edge to Plonk for food and loup bar for a more extensive (natural) wine list. Plonk is newer so I think they have less of a cellar built up.

Thanks, this is helpful. We will make reservations at Plonk because it’s closer to our hotel.
