Meursault Charmes Thread

I had the 2007 PYCM jus toast night. Out of magnum and drinking very well now–incredible wine.

I like Buisson-Charles a good bit and also Mestre-Michelot.

I like Bouchard’s Charmes, but I love their Perrieres. [cheers.gif]

I’m having the PYCM 06 Charmes Friday night. I’ve had it in magnum once last year and it was young - Friday is a 750.

Their Genevrieres is my favorite from them.

I opened a '12 Jadot Meursault Charmes tonight out of .375 ($18.99 from PC!). It seriously exceeded expectations, with impressive density and freshness. Not Roulot, of course, but quite nice.

In late 1995 I was about to deploy to Bosnia for a while. We had an opportunity to take a quick bit of leave before I left. We stayed at a nice little B&B in TriBeCa. It was snowing like crazy so we walked through an almost empty lower Manhattan in ever deepening snow to our dinner reservation at Montrachet. There were three other tables occupied. We had the lobster risotto with their last bottle of the 1986 Comte Lafon Mersault Charmes… A great meal, wonderful moment… And easily one of the best wines of any varietal, color you name it I have ever had. Simply perfect. Cheers, Bob

2010 Jadot Charmes was a very memorable white burg for me.

I have had excellent bottles from Boyer Martenot and Latour Giraud.

Jeremy,

If price is the same do you prefer the Roulot Charmes to the Lafon version? And if so why?

I have never tasted the Roulot, but the 2010 Lafon Charmes is one of the best whites I’ve ever had [cheers.gif]

Andreas,

Lafon’s version is a lot more pared back and finer than it was in the 90’s. His 2009 for example is one of the most brilliant wines of the vintage for mine and the '10 and '11 are superb. I rate it the equal to Roulot’s version and am happy to buy either when offered it at a fair price.

Cheers
Jeremy

P.S: I also love Henri Germain’s version. A magnum of the 2000 is on my shortlist for white wine of the year.

Only had it twice, but both times were memorable.

Yearly, I am offered a single bottle of 1er cru Lafon either Charmes or Genevrieres from a small shop. Which would you take? (I also get a bottle of clos de la barre.)

Over here and at the prices I am offered, the Roulot Charmes is more than twice as expensive as the Lafon Charmes. Since I really like the Lafon Charmes (hoping that newer vintages will not be as prem-ox affected as older vintages), I buy Lafon.

In Meursault , Perrieres in king imo . After that , I guess it depends on the wine maker .
I also tasted the 2014 Charmes from chateau de Meursault , a big fat creamy wine from a top white Burgundy year .
Comte Lafon Charmes is very good when not oxidized but usually outshined by his Perrieres and even his Goutte d’Or .
Henri Germain is excellent and a very underestimated wine-maker .
Roulot’s Charmes is very good but his Perrieres is waaaay superior and for the money I would stick
to his villages wines . Actually , Roulot ( who is one of the best white wine-makers ) proves to me that Charmes is not such a fabulous terroir .

Not yet mentioned here, and outrageously good wines in '13/'14:
Jean Pierre Latour-Giraud.
The '14s are WOW WOW good.

Roulot is also pretty candid about the fact that his parcel of Charmes (Dessous!) is not optimally located within a large and heterogeneous vineyard.

Roulot’s lieux dits have always been the best values in their stable, IMO. Lieux dits in Meursault are better known than in any other village’s “villages” wines…deservedly. Many people don’t even realize they aren’t 1er cru in Meursault.

Roulot was the first estate I ever visited in Meursault (in 1988)…and though I was confused by the labels there…I was blown away by the 1986 lieux dits there, even after tasting the 1er crus.

Thank you Jeremy. Will look forward to tasting the 2012

I just picked up a bottle of '10 Meix Chavaux today over Charmes to try, looking forward to it with a holiday dinner.
