We were in the area over the summer and enjoyed the area. I’d suggest staying close to Mendocino, the town itself. Of course it’s charming, but it’s also the only town of real substance along the coast. We erred a bit by staying much farther south, near Manchester, so it was a chore to get anywhere. There are stunning views along Rt. 1, but know that its twists and turns make commenting slow-going.
As for accommodations, I strongly recommend the Air B&B options.
And for wineries, another thumbs up for Baxter and Philips Hill.
