Mega TN's - Jemrose, Condrieu, Rayas, Clape (one was crap), and a bunch of Cardiac Hill

Dinner at FMIII’s place last night with Jim and Gloria Mack - ‘Rhone Dinner’. Great food prepared by the chef, and some interesting and enlightening wine pairings. Thanks to Jim, Gloria, and Frank for their hospitality! The cool climate of the vineyards used by Jemrose (including Cardiac Hill) are evident, and make for a more Rhone-style wine than many other CA vineyards. I believe this is why Jim matched up some Rhones with his Rhone varietals in the flights, and I appreciated the comparisons.

First Flight–Jemrose Viognier and Condrieu
Pan Seared Monkfish with Citrus Vegetable Salsa, Scallop Sashimi with Hot Soy Yuzu Drizzle, Fried Shrimp Roll

2007 Jemrose Egret Pond Viognier - typical floral and white peach on the nose, but somewhat muted at first, nice attack of light sweetness fades into some bitterness, almost as if there was some stem inclusion, nice acidity making it great with food, which I have not found to be the case with many CA Viogniers

2008 Jemrose Egret Pond Viognier - Even more muted than the '07 on the nose, but stronger sense of florals. Acidity almost of a Sauvignon Blanc, nice finish, seems a bit ‘hot’ (I found out it is 14.5% abv, same as '07), developed nicely in the glass, gaining some weight and mouthfeel.

2006 Andre Perret Condrieu Chery - Interesting nose, reminded me of the smell of a grocery store deli next to the produce section, some meatiness on the nose, great mouthfeel, ripe plum, long finish

2007 Rostaing Condrieu Bonnette - Smells of malo, and not much more. Creaminess on the palate, almost Roussane like in the weight, flabby - dumped out.

Flight Two–Jemrose Grenache and Chateau Rayas CNDP
Roasted Chicken and Orzo Saffron Risotto and Wilted Baby Arugula

2007 Jemrose Foggy Knoll Grenache - interesting spice on the nose of pepper and cured meats. Good mouthfeel, with white pepper, black fruits, nice dusty tannins. A bit of bitterness on the finish, and somewhat disjointed

2008 Jemrose Foggy Knoll Grenache (Barrel sample 1) - (5% Syrah) Deli meats, black pepper, very rustic nose. Old world in character and flavor profile - some were saying ‘feminine’ as well as ‘meaty’, and oddly enough, that makes sense with this wine

2008 Jemrose Foggy Knoll Grenache (Barrel sample 2) - (10% Syrah) A bit flabby for my preferences, and the syrah here seemed to take over, even with just 10% - universal preference was for Sample 1

2004 Chateau Rayas CNDP - Classic French ‘funk’ on the nose (reminiscent of some older Bdx) with anise, violets, red fruits. Good balance of sweetness on the midpalate, light mouthfeel, excellent long finish

2005 Chateau Rayas CNDP - As above, but more minerality and meatiness on the nose. Stronger tannic structure and acidity makes me think this one is made to last, and the fruit seems a bit held back, perhaps in a sleeping stage now. Paired with the rich food, though, this wine emerged to some degree

Flight Three–2006 Cardiac Hill Syrah Horizontal
Rib Eye with Stilton Chive Butter and Wild Mushrooms

This Flight was done blind, so my notes were put together with the wines after they were unwrapped. An interesting exercise to take 4 wines using fruit from the same vineyard, in the same vintage, and compare blind.

2006 Jemrose Cardiac Hill Syrah - hot nose, some smoked meats but harsh overall on the nose. Good weight and mouthfeel, but bitter and harsh on the finish - seems just really high on the alcohol, and nothing else showing. (Bad bottle)

2006 Carlisle Cardiac Hill Syrah - Wow, tremendous wine. Very unique nose, with some sweet apples among the mix of aromas. Not as bold as the others, but balanced and complex. Beautiful florals and red fruits on the palate, sort of a ‘bloody’ aspect on the palate, with meatiness and salinity, great tannic grip, smooth and sweet finish

2006 Shane Cardiac Hill Syrah (called Jemrose vineyard on the label) - Nice nose, seems to have more minerality than the others, along with sweet red and black fruits and pepper on the nose. Heavy, silky mouthfeel, tannic, white pepper, nice finish

2006 Baldissari Cardiac Hill Syrah - Strong aromas of cured meat, pepper, but a lot of heat coming through on the nose as well. Palate shows nicely integrated black fruit, pepper, dried meat - not complex, but very good. I’d swear this wine was made with American oak, as I detected maple and vanilla on the oak treatment.

Flight Four–Cardiac Hill TBR and Clape
Shiso Panko Crusted Lamb Chop with Sweet Potato Pancake

2007 Jemrose Cardiac Hill Syrah - A blast of alcohol on the nose, some black fruit and meatiness coming through, blast of sweetness, pepper, some bitterness on the finish - this wine seemed tight when poured, as it opened up after a while, gaining complexity and expressing the fruit

2007 Shane Jemrose Syrah - A bit tight as well, but some blueberries (flame suit on) along with the peppered meats and a good tannic structure. Another wine that seemed to open up after some time in the glass

2008 Jemrose Cardiac Hill Syrah (barrel sample) - Nice florals on the nose, pepper, red and black fruits, nice mouthfeel, a bit ‘big’ on the pepper, though. Long finish, nice wine

2003 Clape Cornas - Stewed apples, raisins, some soil on the nose. Palate starts out moderately acceptable, but falls immediately. This wine is garbage, seriously. It’s not a bad bottle (ruined/corked or otherwise), it’s just bad wine. I would be monumentally upset to have paid the money for this wine when it is so bad. Found out later that it was RMP95. Barf.

2005 Clape Cornas - NOW we’re talking. Beautiful bright and vibrant nose, lively mouthfeel with good balance and acidity, red fruits, long and elegant finish. A fantastic wine.

Flight Five–Jemrose Late Viognier and Late Harvest Condrieu
Organic Lemon Bars - a Jill Murray Creation

2008 Jemrose Egret Pond LHV
2004 Yves Cuilleron "Ayguets"

I did not take notes on these wines, but enjoyed both immensely, both with and without the lemon bars. The color on the Cuilleron was amazingly bronze and dark - very interesting.

Indeed a great event!

RHONE DINNER AT FRANK MURRAY’S WITH JIM & GLORIA MACK - (11/14/2009)

This was a great event that I was fortunate enough to be part of. Jim & Gloria supplied all of the wines in a great comparison dinner of cool climate Bennett Valley and Northern Rhone varietals. Wonderful company, great food and wine.
Jemrose Viognier; Condrieu
Pairing: Pan Seared Monkfish with Citrus Vegetable Salsa; Scallop Sashimi with Hot Soy Yuzu Drizzle; Fried Shrimp Cake

  • 2007 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Honeysuckle, tart apples. Nice citric acidity, great floral aromatics.
  • 2008 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Nose of white flowers. Richer mouthfeel than the 2007, oily. Tart lemon, granny smith apples, delicious food wine.
  • 2006 André Perret Condrieu Chery - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
White peaches, stony minerality, meyer lemons, mandarin oranges. Very smooth, long finish. My WOTF.
  • 2007 Rene Rostaing Condrieu La Bonnette - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Very floral, asian pear, oily. Overly smooth, residual sugar, vanilla. Oak is prominent now, should integrate with more bottle time.

Jemrose Grenache; Rayas Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Pairing: Roasted Chicken and Orzo Saffron Risotto with Wilted Baby Arugula and Organic Baby Brussel Sprouts

  • 2007 Jemrose Grenache Foggy Knoll - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Rich, extremely peppery finish. 10% syrah. Dark red fruits dominate, thick mouthfeel.
  • 2008 Jemrose Grenache Foggy Knoll - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Barrel sample #1 (5% syrah): great aromatics, strawberries, raspberries, baking spices. Wonderful varietal character on display, crisp, spicy, elegant. Very nice.
  • 2008 Jemrose Grenache Foggy Knoll - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Barrel sample #2 (10% syrah): Rich, deep color. Richer mouthfeel than the first barrel sample, more fruit dominant, spiciness muted. I preferred barrel sample #1.
  • 2004 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Great funk on the nose. Red fruits, cinnamon, cloves. Healthy dose of dirt on the finish. Delicious.
  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Seemed tight, closed up. Not as expressive as the 2004.

2006 Cardiac Hill Syrah Horizontal
Pairing: Ribeye Steak with Stilton Cheese Butter and Wild Mushrooms

Jemrose Cardiac Hill Syrah; Clape Cornas
Pairing: Shiso Panko Crusted Lamb Chop with Sweet Potato Cake

  • 2007 Jemrose Syrah Cardiac Hill Bennett Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Maple syrup, blueberries, sausage and pancakes. Yes, it did smell like breakfast in the glass. Nice balance, good finish.
  • 2008 Jemrose Syrah Cardiac Hill Bennett Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Barrel sample. Osso bucco, roasted tomatoes, dark fruit. Short in the midpalate and finish at first, lengthened with air. I like where this wine is going.
  • 2003 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Green nose, roasted sweetness, raisin bran. Showed all of the nasty characteristics of this vintage.
  • 2005 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Smoky, earthy, dark fruits, blood sausage. Love the mouthfeel of this wine, great grip.

Jemrose Late Harvest Viognier; Late Harvest Condrieu
Pairing: Dr. Jill’s Homemade Organic Lemon Bars with a Tart Twist

  • 2008 Jemrose Viognier Late Harvest Egret Pond - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
Apricots, honey, tons of citric acidity. After 30 minutes in glass, showed fresh comice pears, hint of sweetness that was nicely offset by the acidity. Not your typical overly sweet dessert wine, very nice.
  • 2004 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Ayguets - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
Caramel color, strange at such a young age. Toffee nose, tangerines, sweet stone fruits. A bit cloying.

Wow, I’m jealous! Great notes you guys. I tasted the 07 Jemrose Viognier at Family Winemakers and was very impressed with the freshness and acidity, which is rare these days for Ca. Vio. Jim is doing a great job with his vineyards and wines.

Nice work dudes. Bummer about that Clape but I guess even the best can screw up in an insane vintage like 03.

Did Jill cook all the food?

John,

The first four courses were catered. The food was tremendous.

Brian

Uuuuuuummmmm…hello!

Looked like a great time had by all. Thanks for the notes.

Well, it seems Todd and Brian got this rolling so that is appreciated. A lot of things about wine give me a thrill, feed my own passion, which is drinking syrah, lots of it, with people of the caliber of Jim and Gloria Mack. I have begun to get to know them, their own goals for making rhone varietals, and like so many I have met over the years, a generosity to share. Thanks to you both for coming down and letting us enjoy some of what you do, some of those who work with your fruit and also give me a peek into the rhone thing.

As for the dinner, we did have Peter come in and cook the full meal for us over the course of about 4 hours, with Jill doing dessert. Based on how I felt yesterday, I was wiped out. I finished cleaning up the place about 1AM and then woke up at 6AM, was a bit wobbly over breakfast and then decided it was time to call it a night about 8PM last night. Based on all the wine and even with some spitting, I was less disciplined than normal. [help.gif]

Having said that, I did get some notes to paper, although not many. [swearing.gif] Seeing The Todd walk out of her with his right mind, as well as Brian, I think they better captured the wines above but I offer the TNs below.

I will say that I would differ on The Todd regarding the 2007 Jemrose FK Grenache. Finishing it right now as I drop in this post, I find it not to be disjointed at all. Larger boned? Yes. Dark? Moderately. But fleshy, with a good depth of flavor and CA styled weight and finish. For as much as I complain about not getting Grenache, I like this wine.

Anyway, some notes do follow. Thanks for a great night and another opportunity to peel back the rhone varietals and enjoy them for all that makes them for me so compelling.

  • 2004 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/16/2009)
Well, now having tasted both the 2004 and 2005 (again), it’s sure a treat to try these wines. In comparison to the 2005, the 2004 seems riper to me, even darker in tone and expression. Yes, they both have stable, leather/saddle notes but it adds something to the wine. I like the 2005 better still but the 2004 sure ain’t bad.
  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/16/2009)
Nearly one month since my last bottle, I guess I can make a habit of drinking Rayas. My impression this time lines up much with my note one month prior, with a spicy/autumny note, integrated acidity and complete. However, this time I noticed much more saddle and leather, something I noted last month but moreso this time.
  • 2006 Baldassari Syrah Cardiac Hill - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
My impression from tasting this wine in June is nearly identical this time: lots of cinnamony oak, milk chocolate, decadence and black fruit. Like then, this wine is absent too much of the varietal character that Cardiac should/oughta show. Too much wood and intervention here IMO.
  • 2006 Carlisle Syrah Cardiac Hill - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
Dark, with big structure, ore and menthol. I guessed Shane but when we pulled the bags off, it was Carlisle. Wow, nice work Mike O.
  • 2006 Jemrose Syrah Cardiac Hill Bennett Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
Drinking this with Jim Mack (the grower and owner), I will go on his lead that this was a flawed bottle. My own notes with the wine still in the bag say boozy, rich and dark with black fruit. NR (flawed)
  • 2006 Shane Syrah Jemrose Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
Pepper, pure and deep flavor. A long and spicy finish with dark chocolate. I believe Jim M said this is 50 new wood, 50 whole cluster.
  • 2007 Jemrose Grenache Foggy Knoll - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
This note is from a bottle open just over 48 hours. Fully fleshed out and the wine is quite plush at this point now, with lots of black cherry, chocolate, some leather, and like with my initial impression on Saturday night when first opened, a juiciness. No heat, some residual structure and lots of juicy, plush dark fruit.
  • 2007 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
I like this better than the 2008, side by side at this point. The 2007 seems clean and dialed in, with mineral and nice weight and a lighter color.
  • 2008 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/16/2009)
A bigger wine to me than the 2007. Even the color, which I noted during the dinner alongside the 2007, the 2008 seemed darker, had a bronzish color. Like I noted last time, a creamy note, more glycerine and tropical fruits. Seems a bit riper, too.

Hey Phil, what were you doing that day?

Gloria and I had a great time at the dinner. Big thanks to Frank and Jill for hosting the event. The food match ups were spot on and the quality of the food excellent.

My favorites of the Northern Rhone wines were:

2006 Andre Perret Condrieu Chery- very classy wine, great vineyard

2005 Ch Rayas CNP- yes it had some funk but I have had this before and it does blow away. Notes of raspberry, spice, clove. Silky texture and long finish. Still a baby but great materials. Love how this wine almost feels like a Grand Cru Burgundy.

2005 Clape Cornas- just what you want from a Cornas, pepper, earth, dark fruits. Great texture, strong mid palate and persistent finish. This will evolve into a great wine.

The 2004 Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Ayguets was very good but surprised by the amber color for only being from 2004. Very complex nose of ripe stone fruit with caramel overtones. Creamy texture and sweet finish. I agree it could have used a bit more acid.

It was great meeting some people from the board and of course the Board Maestro himself,Todd French.

Wow, another outstanding dinner. Thank you Jim and Gloria, Frank and Jill and all who attended. Great Company!!! And just a great way to learn about wine and philosophies of wine. I will say the most interesting thing that stood out to me was how much different I found the 2008 Jemrose Foggy Knoll barrel sample one versus barrel sample two in flight number two. I preferred sample one as did, I think, everyone, but it was just a fun way to see how what seems to me to be a small percentage change 5% to 10% syrah can really change the overall wine.

That was rather eye-opening. The difference 5% makes was not only significant, but incredibly polarizing - even if everybody went to the same pole!

Yes it was a clear mandate as to which Grenache barrel sample everyone preferred, including myself after tasting them side by side. Grenache is in some ways not unlike Pinot Noir when it is grown in a cool climate. You get very bright expressive aromatics that are distinctively Grenache. While adding larger percentages of Syrah or Mourvedre can make for an interesting and sometimes outstanding wine as in GSM blends you risk losing that distinct Grenache aroma and flavor profile which can be as compelling as Pinot Noir in the right conditions.

I’ll add a parting shot here, as I was able to kidnap one full closed bottle of the 2007 Jemrose Cardiac Hill syrah, which I opened last night and am finishing tonight. Softer and more evolved for me for the vintage, which is what I have tried to capture in the note below. And, The Todd and I will disagree again. His notes above mention alcohol on the nose…Frenchenstein, I don’t get that, not at all. I have swirled and tasted this wine numerous times over last night and tonight and there is no booze on the nose. The bottle is labeled at 14.1% and I would say that is dead on. Aromatically, for me, the wine is just fine.

  • 2007 Jemrose Syrah Cardiac Hill Bennett Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (11/17/2009)
Dark color, with a charred element to the palate. Loads of dark fruit, some gingerbread/cinnamon notes, blueberry finishing acidity, in fact, lots of blue notes. There is a ferrous quality to the finish with a medium weight. Does not express big intensity or forwardness but rather a gentler, darker feel married together. And, with 24 hours being open, I polished off the rest of it tonight. This wine grows on me…the dark color, the gentle texture and dark blue accents of fruit. I would say this wine peaks in 12-18 months and goes through 2012.

A decade ago, we ALMOST crushed Frenchie with this dinner. Maybe one more bottle and I could have got a photo for extortion down the road. A few photos to reminisce in honor of Berserkers decade.

Oh, fantastic! I actually remember this dinner - amazing it was THAT LONG AGO!!!

You still own that shirt, Frenchie? Love that shirt. And to see Stoneking with that big smile…this is a photo that exemplifies Wine Berserkers for me. You could put that photo on the website as an icon as to what this site means to so many, including me. Wonderful.

A Syrah-stained smile - yeah, always fun!

Yes, I have that shirt, but ‘the boss’ doesn’t want me to wear it…

Awesome dig up Frankie. I enjoyed reliving to experience through the notes a pics. I vividly remember the France vs US Pinot tasting we did at Jim and Glorias back in Spril of 2012. Fun times with good people and lasting memories. Things that make me glad I found this site in the first place. grouphug
