Read it and replied . . .
Don’t need to be a ‘wine snob’ to realize that glassware DOES make a difference with wines . . .
Of course, that does NOT mean that every restaurant needs to supply 20 different types of stemware depending upon variety, region, etc . . .
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers!
Amazing the difference proper glasses make. I’m not embarrassed to tote my own if the restaurant doesn’t do an adequate job in my opinion.
Great article
I think there are exceptions to the above. For instance, here in Costa Mesa we have a tapas style restaurant that serves their “simple” Spanish wines in tumblers and it works well there. The most expensive wine on their brief list is $23 so nothing too complicated, just good food wine.
Sounds like Ad Hoc has some more serious wines on their list which Do require more suitable glassware.
I agree in general and have done comparison tastings between glassware with results usually for better glassware. That said, people do make too much a big deal about it. I’ve drunk some heavy duty wines like Kosta Browne out of straight glasses or even coffee mugs at a funky pizza joint.
If you think in advance it is going to be worse and it is going to bother you (the glassware), it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
A.
I agree and have tasted some great wines out of less-than-stellar glasses . . .
That said, it really does not do the wine justice - and one may think a wine is not very good but in fact it may be great, but showing poorly because of the stemware.
I remember doing tastings with my classmates at UC Davis and was constantly amazed at how different the same wines smelled (and tasted) out of the various hodge-podge of glassware that we individually brought.
Cheers!
That article is a very entertaining read and of course Matt is right about the glassware.
For those of you seeking additional Kramer wine articles, I stumbled across this archive of his articles from The Sun a while back:

Thanks, some interesting reads.
