While walking through Tribeca the other day, I stumbled on this new store at 211 West Broadway, looking out over the Franklin St. station on the 1 train. New owners bought the retail shop associated with the wine bar Vino-Vino and reopened the shop in June. http://maslow6.com/index.php#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They named it for the psychologist Abraham Maslow, which is the first hint that this is not your average wine shop.
If you like odd ball stuff, this should definitely be on your circuit. This is where I got the William Fevre Chilean pinot I posted on the other day (TN: A damned good Franco-Chilean pinot from W. Fevre - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), and they had other odd things like Blau Frankisch and Zweigelt, plus good but not overly famous producers of more mainstream wines. Wine Searcher shows no other stores in NY state carrying the Fevre.
It’s not all obscure, though. They also had a range of big name Barolos. If there is any theme running through the selections, I’d say it is an emphasis on wines with acid (a la Chambers Street and Crush). I didn’t see the usual array of big, jammy wines here.
It’s brave of them to set up shop where they have, with Chambers Street and Tribeca Wine Merchant so nearby, but I saw few overlaps, and there were proportionally more moderately priced wines here.
I have no connection to these folks. I just admired what they’re doing. To stock a store with so much unusual stuff, you know they have to believe in their products. Based on the Fevre, I’d happily try other unusual things off their shelves
