We have a stop over in Lugano in mid to late July. Does anyone have any recs?
How long are you there and do you have a place to stay?
We will be in the area for 2 nights. We have relatives with a vacation home in Ponte Tresa. We do not have a place to stay yet.
Nice, we had friends living in Lugano until recently and when we went to stay we’d always drive to the supermarket in Ponte Tresa to stock up.
Have you been to Morcote before? If it’s a relatively short stay and you don’t actually need to stay in Lugano itself it’s a beautiful spot.
Some nice hotels, restaurants right on the lake and you can go to the Tenuta Castello di Morcote vineyard on the hill about that does some really nice wines (it’s the main Rose I drink in the summer)
If that doesn’t work and you do prefer Lugano itself let me know.
We’ve stayed in Lugano a couple times - most recently in July 2023. Both times we’ve stayed at Lugano Dante - not a fancy hotel but convenient if traveling by train. Last time we did the tasting at Tenuta Castello di Morcote.
For dinner, I recommend taking the boat from Lugano to Cantine di Gandria on the lake (but plan to eat early because the return boats don’t run very late).
We stayed two nights in February and stayed at the View. Wonderful hotel and restaurant was very good. But if you have one night in Lugano do the chefs table at Felix Lo Basso. So much fun and wonderful interactions with the chefs. He’s from Puglia so lots of seafood but my favorite dish was a foie gras with gelee and tuna.
There are a couple of churches in town near the LAC but one has a fabulous fresco that stands out as one of the best examples in the region.
