Los Gatos/Santa Cruz/Monterey Group Dinner #20

FYI, Shang is not shy when it comes to spice/heat! Mapo tofu is awesome, but it’s the hottest version I’ve ever had.

Thanks for the recommendation! Let’s take some chances

It’s a must-order dish! Mandatory to spoon it over plain rice to mitigate some of the heat. But so worth it…

I’m in if there is room.

For sure!

Put me down as a possible/probable

Re what wine to bring: IMO Shang food is really hard to match with anything other than bubbles, Riesling, or crisp acidic whites. I like bringing old reds to our events, doesn’t work there. I brought a grand cru older red Burg, no one touched it. I have tons of Riesling so that works.

Yes, those are the best wine matches. Diving even further down on Riesling, I and others have found Kab and Spat work best. A little residual sugar cuts through the spice.

I feel young reds work, again ones with good acidity and low/no new oak.
