Looking for interesting South African Wines

Another on I liked (see TN on CT):

Tokara Director’s Reserve 2011 (the red blend)
(2015)

Thanks for the recs. I’m interested in trying more SA wines but don’t see a lot in this area-DC.

Unfortunately, this is a nationwide problem. There are lots of interesting wines made in SA these days, but very little makes it to the States beyond critter wines. There seems to be better distribution in the UK.

Yes, and in Canada. I don’t think any of the Commonwealth countries imposed a trade boycott during apartheid, so South Africa wine was on the shelves in those countries when it was illegal to import it the U.S. I think the national “brand” recognition in the U.S. still suffers from that. Plus, I don’t think any American critic has ever consistently talked up S.A. wines.

Alheit Cartology is killer Chenin Blanc based blend.
I have SA on my “must try more” list.

I have to check about imports into Canada during Apartheid, I think they may have been prohibited for a while. But certainly reasonable distribution here now, for. A “New” region.
As well as critter branding I think that clumsy Pinotage may have adversely affected the national brand.
I’ve mooted South African tasting for the club but not much enthusiasm yet.

Some of the greatest producers are mentioned in this article:

I also found some bad news. The “I Am Old” site, a registry of mapped ancient vineyards in South Africa is now defunct.
