Kevin - thanks very much for the great information. We’re in Cape Town in April and would like to do a Vineyard trip however we have a 12 year old son. Were there any that you would say would be particularly family friendly or have things to do nearby with a 12 year old so we could combine a day?
I am not going to be any help on nearby places that will better occupy a 12 year old.
However, nearly every winery was family friendly. Babylonstoren has loads of things to do and see and is probably your best bet. Delair Graff is a large place with art work and a museum atmosphere. But I can’t think of anything that would greatly appeal to a 12 year old.

Not sure if your 12yo is into cars, but I mentioned the Anthonij Rupert car museum earlier. Lots of things like Ferrari F40’s and such that could be interesting for him.
