Greetings, looking for recommendations for a great Alps/Dolomites resort to include as a side trip from Venice in the early Fall. For my wife and I. Just want to relax and include some hiking. Hopefully, great food too. Thanks.
Not a “resort” as such but we loved our stay at the legendary Friulian shrine to wine called La Subida: Google Search
Great base for hiking, plus a fabulous casual restaurant and a renowned 1-star. It’s barely a 2-hour drive from Venice and surrounded by beauty and history. The Slovenian border (and 3-star Hisa Franko) is very close by, plus the old town of Cormon, Udine, etc.
La Subida features a series of low-key but charming cottages, some with features like a sauna. We loved it. YMMV.

We really loved Hotel Weinegg in Alto Adige. Lots of nice hiking and wineries to visit around there.
I did a few nights in San Vito di Cadore, a few km from Cortina. Both places would be great for day hikes with lots of restaurants (a few high end) and hotels. San Vito is much smaller and my preference. About 2-2.5 hrs drive from Venice.
It might be more sensible to target the Dolomites (also properly mountainous), as it’s much nearer to Venice than the Alps over in the west. As for food, some truly great cheeses, but be prepared that the food tends towards ‘hearty’ rather than elegant.
unless you go here!
Ortisei in the South Tyrol is 2-hour train ride if that is what you would consider a side trip from Venice. A pretty ski-and-hiking town in the Dolomites-Italian Alps. In October 2024, wife and I day-tripped from our base in Bolzano and hiked one of the 4 excellent loops for 6 miles in 3 hours and had an excellent Tyrolean lunch before heading back in the early afternoon.
Sorry a bit late to this but we just stayed at San Luis Lodges In Avelengo - a short twisty trip up the mountain from Merano - spa, dining, afternoon tea/cake breaks. We really loved this little piece of heaven. They did a great job and arranged a car/drive who was available during our visit - about the same price as a regular Uber.
Dinner is at the only restaurant but menu changed each night - they also had a regional specialty on the menu each night and an excellent wine list with lots of local wines. I loved that they offered half portions - perfect for me. Dinner is included in the half board - definitely a higher end half board. Breakfast is in your “cabin” - you pick what you want off a very detailed offering. It’s very exclusive and no non-hotel guests can access. There’s a cute little chapel where they offer music each evening. And the little Maltese named Luis is friendly and welcomes you. Highly recommend. Lots of return guests.
We stayed at Ciasa Salares in San Cassiano - Alta Badia. The location, hotel, staff, service, restaurant Cocun and wine cellar were all terrific. The location was a short drive to many of the ski lifts in the region that offer the easy way to the top, for great hikes/walks. We booked a wine tasting with the owner (Clemens) and it was great. He poured several wines from small producers in the region. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings at Cocun. After 7+ courses, we were offered a selection of cheeses. That was followed by a visit to the chocolate room where we made selections from 100+ chocolates from around the world. That was followed by a visit to the whiskey room…It was a wonderful dinner! We have much more of the world to see, so we may not make it back to this region, but if we did, we would definitely return to Ciasa Salares.
