Long Island

In Nassau County, there are three byo no charge kebab restaurants I know about–

Miraj Healthy Grill in Williston Park–cook kebabs over charcoal, table cloths, nice atmosphere except for TV they added to front room, can get crowded weekends;
Kabul Grill in Westbury- yoghurt marinated chix kebab is moist, plain atmosphere, short wait weekends;
Afghan Grill in New Hyde Park-- home style cooking, friendly service, small but pleasant decor, no reservation needed.

Might want to bring cork screw and glasses when you visit.

Zar was a definite step above all three.

Any options near the Nassau Coliseum for before a show, and on a Sunday? Thanks for any tips.

Asher, the only place I can think of, and it may not be what you are looking for, is Stella Ristorante in Floral Park. It has been around for over 50 years, and the menu probably hasn’t changed, but that is why I go. Corkage is $25ish.

Thank you, Art and Diane. Very good choice.

I would be interested in knowing how you find it. Haven’t been to either one.

As a follow up, I was just there last night. Food was great, but I forgot how bad the stemware is.

Last night at Basil Cafe, St. James. Nice stems, nice dinner, nice people.

I’m glad you liked it, Art.

Newsday just published a survey of wine stores on Long Island, and it’s a good article. Among other things, she includes my favorite LI wine store (Village Wine Merchant in Sea Cliff) so obviously her judgment is beyond question. [wink.gif]

I obviously agree with her summary of VWM, and she is also spot on with her reviews of Post, Total (I agree with her that their Italian and NYS sections are the highlight), and she was suitably diplomatic about Stew Leonards. I’m certainly interested in checking out the other stores she featured, though they are a bit far afield for me.

Newsday has emerged from the dark Tribune era to become the best it has been in years, possibly ever. All of their local coverage, not just food and restaurants, has become quite good as demonstrated by their recent piece on housing discrimination.

Any recommendations near or around Exit 57 off the LIE/Hauppauge area that will be open for Thanksgiving?

Not sure if it’s open for Thanksgiving, but you are very close to Steve’s Piccolo Bussola.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, they are closed on Thanksgiving day.

Not sure who is open nor BYO:

Mario (Italian)
Pace’s (Steakhouse)
Insignia (Steakhouse, and Sushi?)
Cirio’s (Italian)

Great! These works perfectly and 3 out of 4 are open. Pace’s has free 1st bottle corkage fee. After 1st it is $25 with no bottle limit.

" Pace’s has free 1st bottle corkage fee. After 1st it is $25 with no bottle limit. "

Free corkage is all the time or only on T-Day?

Let me know how it goes. Have eaten at 3 of 4 and they are good IMO (not Insignia).

When you say not Insignia, are you saying that you havent eaten there or Insigna is not good?

Haven’t been - sorry for the confusion .
Mario is old school and very good .
Ciros is a step down but still ok/good .

Enjoy whatever you do.
