Love Sheekey’s. Especially the fish pie.
The Barbary is amazing, but I’m not sure it’s ‘Christmas Eve’ fare, unless your Christmas Eve skews ‘North-African-ish over charcoal’.
I think I have been to Sheekey’s, but long time ago (if I remember correctly, it has been around forever). Kinda high end fish, I remember. Pretty solid still, I assume, and if memory serves, it would make for a ‘nice’ dinner.
Thanks for ALL the suggestions. I’ll see if I can hit the Barbary, too.
Recent London stay.
Trishna was very nice and very very casual. A bit too noisy but well worth a visit.
Noize was also very good, a bit more subdued, with a small great wine list. Had a Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin VV 2013 which went well with the Gougeres and the Duck Confit.
And a birthday dinner for my wife at The Ritz was good food and an even better show!!
You found Trishna too noisy and then went to Noize?
Thanks to all who recommended Lorne on this thread. Went last night and food was excellent; special mention to the terrific hash brown/pheasant confit appetizer and the beef raviolo.
Had a very pleasant Christmas Eve dinner with the girls at J Sheekey’s, thank you very much. Tried walking in to Barbary and St john’s on Commercial Street but, alas, failed.
Really liked the Barbary.
Damn. I was staying a block from there. I know I should have made a rez ahead or kept walking in!!
Also great is Palomar, owned by the same people.
If you go to Barbary, get the Knafeh.
We visited London just before Christmas and I wanted to share some restaurant experiences:
Quo Vadis: Classic, high quality British cuisine in a nice setting. Wine list is so-so. I’d probably go back, but not a high priority.
Planque: Absolutely worth a trip for this restaurant. Excellent food and a phenomenal wine list at reasonable prices.
Kiln: Amazing Thai food, highly recommended! They don’t take reservations, so we went around 6.30pm and left our phone number for a table around 7.30pm (the Bar Americain in Brasserie Zedel down the street was a good way to bridge the waiting time).
Restaurant @ Tate Modern: We had lunch here and I would highly recommend this! Beautiful view, very good food, and a short but nice wine list (e.g. 2014 Lafon Barre by the glas / carafe / bottle for a reasonable price)
Kiln has a sister restaurant, Mountain, that is also very good. Quo Vadis was a club for a long time. We stay across the street, but haven’t been for more than a cocktail.
The Tamil Prince ($$) is incredible. It’s located in a former neighborhood pub, just 5 minutes from King’s Cross / St. Pancras. The small space retains the pub feel, but the flavors are explosive! I still think about the onion bhaji with mint chutney. Here’s an early review from the Guardian.
Pics are from my visit in December 2023. Lamb curry and onion bhaji.
Thanks for the nudge on Planque, as it’s been on my list for a while.
Thanks for the nudge on the Tamil Prince as well, as it too has been on my list…way too long.
You’re welcome!
Love Planque!
My wife and I moved back to London about a year ago and have explored a bit of north London. Tamil Prince is one of our favorites now - just hard to get a reservation.
.
Yeah; I called at 8:45pm and begged, promised I’d be good , etc. I got there at 9:15 (I walked) and was out by 10.
