Littorai Pickup Day 11/07/09

Fun event. Great spread of cheeses, bread, and salumi. Current releases were at the top level of the winery, and library wines were at the bottom level.

07 Mays Canyon Chardonnay: Some straw and stone on the nose. Great acid with long finish.

07 Charles Heintz Chard: Pronounced apple and pear. Again great acid, maybe a little more mellow than the Mays.

07 Thieriot Chard: [Initial response] “I like this!” Ripe apple and peach. Citrus. Lingering acidity in the mouth. Yum.

08 Sonoma Coast Pinot: Mostly declassified Hirsch. Bright blue fruits. Touch of peatiness ('08 fires…). Very easy to enjoy now. Medium bodied and open. Soft tannins and gentle acid in the mouth.

08 Les Larmes Pinot: Declassified Anderson Valley vineyards. Similar aroma and body profile as the Sonoma Coast. My three bottles I picked up from the last release are all gone now.

07 Savoy Pinot: Super tight aromas of rose and spice (some whole cluster). Very tight in the mouth with a juicy attack and very, very fine tannins. Throw this in the back of the cellar for several years before opening.

07 Cerise: Also very tight. A bit more floral but less spice than the Savoy (some whole cluster). Similar mouthfeel as the Savoy: acidity and very fine tannins. Again, throw this in the back of the cellar.

07 Mays Canyon: Darker, riper fruit with some vanilla and wood aromas. Medium bodied in the mouth. Does not feel as lean as the preceding two and initially seems more approachable now, but there are a LOT of grippy tannins that persist on the finish.Yum…but bury this underground for many years before opening.

07 The Haven: Ripe dark fruit and plums. Nice acids with mild but coating tannins. Long finish. Yum.

07 Thieriot: Assistant winemaker Trey carried this along with him everywhere he went since it wasn’t available to purchase. Pretty red fruit aromas. Still a bit closed, but definitely more open than the Cerise and Savoy. Less intense than the Haven or Mays, so it feels delicate in the mouth. Lacy tannins.

Library stuff:

02 Mays Canyon Chard: “Very Nice” Mellow but omnipresent acids and fine structure.

03 Cerise Pinot: Some emerging secondary aromas with some accompanying spice. Lots of acid with fine tannins. Still feels a little young/tight. Good to enjoy now but probably even better in a couple more years.

03 Mays Canyon: Cola and dark fruit aromas with subtle spice. Wow. Still grippy tannins in the mouth. A little tight (freshly opened bottle). LONG finish.

I already blew my budget this fall otherwise I would have picked up the 07 Haven and the 03 and 07 Mays Canyon in addition to my pre-ordered pickup wines.

Wow! Where was this held?

At their newish winery facility in Sebastopol. They finished construction in time for the 08 vintage.
