Lentil & Sausage Soup with Icon

Tonight’s supper, on a return to Winter - snow in the morning, low overcast most of the day, temps in mid- to low 30sF all day, was a rich lentil and sausage soup. The sausage was the same as we had last night in the pasta sauce. The sausage flavors came out in the soup very nicely; the sausage was a bit overwhelmed in the pasta sauce. Wine was a 1999 Ravenswood “Icon” - fill less than a cm below the capsule; bright garnet in color; straightforward nose and flavors of dark berries and currants; pleasant fruity middle with resolved tannins; and a long, simple berry finish. It was very enjoyable with the soup.

Then to finish, since the soup was very filling, we had a 375ml bottle of 2002 Maculan Dindarello - medium yellow-gold in color; rich slightly carmelized white fruit in nose and flavors; rich fruit with good acidity in the mid-palate; and a medium long rich, fruity finish. I had a couple Vanilla Piroulines with the Dindarello, very nice. Carollee just had the wine. A nice finish while watching Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet on Inside the Actors’ Studio (via TiVo).

I was going to do lentil with bacon here, a strange coincidence, then realized I wanted to grill!! So burgers! Take that mother nature and your fresh snow! [berserker.gif]

Hmmm. Ravenswood Icon. Did you drink any of it young Dick? It was a bottle that I was enthused about in my formative years (don’t let me bull$hit you, I’m still in my formative years) but it was hit and miss as far as delivering the goods. If you have notes, I’d love to hear how it compared young to mature.

Dick drink a YOUNG wine?? [rofl.gif]

The first 1983 Dominus he drank was a year and a half ago. Opened the OWC right in front of me.

He’s pouring 1970 zins…

The 99 is no doubt his first shot at this wine…

The only ones I had ypung was tasting them annually at the winery. I’ve just started drinking them over the last couple years. I mostly have '97, '98. & '99s.
