when you order from last bottle, i noticed the hold option. How long will they hold it for and will the shipping later on still be free?
I picked that on all my orders, even from the marathon. Shipping will be free at the later date.
What I donāt know is will they automatically notify me when they are ready to ship or if I have to reach out to tell them to ship
The hold option is for summer hold during the hot months. They ship everything in October, usually mid-late. if you email them, you can request them to hold it a little bit longer.
I had summer hold in Philly and they already shipped all my elivettes. Got them last week. The Keenan was a better wine to my taste funny enough even though it was 2020 compared to the 2012 elivette.
I reached out to them on the contact page and setup a shipping date and address. Also arranged that anything I bought before that shipping date would be added to that Marathon order.
I got my 20 Chap Signature last week, opened one Saturday night. Rich and plush, long finish, no hints of any smoke, charriness, or anything offputting I would attribute to smoke taint. Only difference between this and past Chap Signatures is it was muted on the nose. It never really developed at all, but we also PNP and polished the bottle in about 2 hours without decant. Was that due to treatment/ smoke/ other, who knows.
Overall, very enjoyable, both my wife and I liked it. She even stole my last glass. Very Chap Signature like others Iāve had (I think Iāve had 2012-2019 minus 2017). Iāll enjoy the other bottles in the coming years, and likely store one away for 10+ years for science. Very happy with the purchase.
Just one manās opinion.
Nope. The wine is clearly not what it is in non-fire vintages. Enjoy the $20 wine though
LOL.
I appreciate @K_Kladderās review and Iām looking forward to my $20 wine.
Reading comprehension is important. Enjoy that wine!
Have you drank one yet?
Still waiting on that list of smoke tainted wines youāve encountered?
To be fair, he did use a ābutā¦ā
I canāt speak for OP but maybe his experiences with past Signatures included decanting and enjoying over a longer period.
No difference in how we have enjoyed these wines in the past, just dropped that in for reference for others. We are a PNP familyā¦
Adding in, to me, this is whatās awesome about wine. Different strokes for different folks. We all have different palate, preferences, etc. Itās fān cool about the hobby. @Jeff_M1 got smoke. I didnāt. My wife didnāt either. I have the palate of a garbage can, my wife is pretty dialed in. End of the day, Iām glad I scored some discounted Chappellet that I will enjoy over the coming years. And I look forward to reporting back in 10+ years on the bottle Iāll store for science.
I donāt think anyone has actually gotten smoke from the Chapellet
I refrained from commenting when the initial offer for the 2020 chap signature came out, but since that discussion is still ongoing, why not. I find it increasingly difficult to take a flyer on these āmysteryā Napa wines from questionable vintages like 2020, for a couple reasons.
-
Experience to date - The wines I have purchased, such as the stags leap SLV mystery 2020, was not of the caliber of a wine that I would pay even the discounted 79.99 for (if memory serves on the price). It was completely outclassed by a 2022 Cantemerle I bought for 29.99.
-
The Wine Market - There are a lot of sure-thing wines out there for the same price as these mystery offers. For 79.99 in the case of stags leap - go to bordeaux and if staying in Napa, grab some DiCo, Beta, Matthiasson, etc. Why Gamble. Even in the 20ish range, go to WineBid, grab some domestic Syrah with some age, get some Bojo, nebbiolo, lots of options still.
I am not suggesting the Chap signature in 2020 is a bad wine, but I have such a large back log of things I want to purchase, that I am getting tired of wasting my budget on wines that are a complete guess.
@Jeff_M1 , sorry I didnāt post this sooner, it might have taken some of the flak off you.
I cracked a bottle yesterday as well, was very curious to taste. Overall it felt more approachable than I would have expected. I did decant it, and had a bit of development from initial darker fruits to very enjoyable red fruits later. Did not perceive too much oak treatment, and I found floral notes to be quite muted. I did pick up a bit of smokiness, but more like you would find in a Syrah than as an actual fault. I found it to be lighter and thinner than I would have expected.
Overall, I think both sides of the argument hold true - it is a delicious wine that IMO is a steal at $30. It is also clearly not the usual Signature. Chappellet made the most of a supremely challenging vintage, and for the price paid the end product is fantastic.
Where did you find this for $20??
It wasnāt, I was just repeating someone elseās assessment verbatim.
