Labor Day Wines - Kistler and Foley

  • 2002 Kistler Chardonnay Hirsch Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (9/7/2009)
Yowza - this was fantastic. A cali Batard-Montrachet almost taste-alike, if there could be such a thing. Lots of power and rich fruit without being flabby. Light golden straw colored hue with a nose of citrus oil and hazelnuts. Firm structure on the palate with sufficient acidity to back the fruit. Good use of oak, well integrated, that rounds out a delightful drink. Very nice finish. Paired very well with scallop risotto. (94 pts.)
  • 2005 Robert Foley Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (9/7/2009)
Deep, juicy, spicy and alcoholic merlot. A very fun drink that has an average struture and medium finish. It paired very well with grilled rosemary/orange brined pork chops. (90 pts.)

A note to those of you concerned about relatively short-term temperature exposure in the 70’s. The Kistler I discovered hidden in my basement after my move this past February. It has been sitting there until yesterday and has seen temps from about 60 in the winter to about 75 in the summer. Absolutely no damage whatsoever.
