label damage AKA douchebaggery redux

A retailer friend just told me about a client (unnamed) who wants to have a bottle replace due to a 1/8 inch x 1/4 inch scratch on the label. BTW, this was a $140 bottle
if that matters?

Do you guys have to deal with this kind of douchebaggery often?

Yeah, I pull out my corkscrew and solve the problem on the spot, pop!

I second that. Are you joking… [suicide.gif] [middle-finger.gif]

Thats pretty bad. A bottle goes threw alot and that’s just at the winery. To expect the label not to get this every now and then is pushing it. Iv’e bought cellared and drank $800 bottles with badly damaged labels and was perfectly fine with it. it’s what inside not outside that matters.

The only thought that crossed my mind is that maybe he want to give it as a gift or he intends to have it where it is on display.

i’ve never had someone call up after the fact, but occasionally, and particularly with a gift bottle, a customer in the store might be a little fussy about how the label looks.

I know a few collectors who are pretty anal about that, though.

That and worse . . .

There’s at least three possibilities (in addition to general anal/OCD stuff):

  1. The bottle is intended as a gift and the customer wants it to be pristine.

  2. The bottle is going to be opened at a special event and the customer wants it to be pristine when presented.

  3. The bottle is going to be re-sold at a later date, and the customer wants a pristine label for the best value.

John, you sold me a Kung Fu girl where the label and screwcap were not perfectly aligned with each other. I demand a refund.

And you would deserve that . . . and worse.
Best, Jim

I bought an 03 Cos marked at 40% off because of damage to the foil.

Started to feel like granny at the grocery looking for dented cans of peas to buy cheap! Feel free to contact me with the damaged-label wines.

When I photograph wine bottles I always ask for labels on the side so I can line up such things…
When I drink wine, I don’t care…

I hate those people…Just buy wine in OWC…no worries as the bottles cant be seen.
