Kutch: Second Chance Offer...

About three weeks ago I received a ‘No wine for you’ postcard from Jamie Kutch. It didn’t matter to me at the time because I have no intention of adding any new wineries to my buy list this year.

Fast forward to today, I just received a ‘second chance’ offer in my mail box from Kutch… Hmmmm… I have a feeling that the wait for many mailing lists will be MUCH smaller in the next few years.

well i, for one, did not take my full allocation, and i’m sure i was not only one. the economy may be to blame, but i also suspect some of the stories circling around jamie kutch may have also played a role.

Hmmm, Note to self. Send out “sorry” letter after you have sold out, not before.

??

but i also suspect some of the stories circling around jamie kutch may have also played a role.

I may be confused, but I thought it was Alex Rodriguez that was in all the news stories circling over the past few days.

So, what pray tell are the Jamie Kutch stories? I feel like an ostrich for not knowing.

Just seems interesting - Marcassin even had to send a second chance offer to their mailing list to sell through their product… To say that demand has gone in the toilet would be an understatement.

I know the Rochioli SV list had a wait of 5 or 6 years - I wonder how that will be effected.

I too was wondering about this as well. I feel like a red-headed step child. “You don’t matter to us… WAIT! You do!”

I’ve been out of the wine gossip loop for awhile now… can someone give me the Cliff’s Notes on the stories circling Jamie? Give me the gossip! I hope it’s juicy!

I loathe searching parker threads for something important.

That one is local.

Si, but not the original one. Mr. Smartypants.

In regards to mailing lists, I remember signing up for some of these thinking that I would get offered a couple years down the road. Lo and behold, this year I’ve made a bunch of the buying lists. I’m sure I’m not the only one…

That was exactly my thought for the Rochioli SV list and a few others - thinking that my income will have increased enough by the time I’m given an offer to justify adding a new and expensive list. Now I’m wondering how much time I have.

Kara - the thread on the Parker board was in regard to KB’s price increase on their appellation wines. In that thread, in which many folks complained about the increase, Jamie said he had the same costs of materials (grapes, corks, bottles, etc.) as KB and yet charged $48 for his Kanzler…

It was seen as another of Jamie’s subtle digs at KB and Michael Browne, Brian Loring, Andrew Vingiello, etc.

Go ahead and read my comments in the thread and particularly Ed Kurtzman’s–I have known Ed for 4 years now and never heard him speak ill of anyone so he must have been outraged to post what he did.

A friend has told me what was in the text message that Ed referred to and it was very mean spirited. This might be slightly paraphrased, as I am going off memory…

Here it went:

Participant at Frank Murray’s big January wine event was sitting next to Ed Kurtzman and drinking one of Ed’s wines. Participant sends a text message to Jamie saying how much he/she likes this particular wine.

Jamie responds - Ed is okay, at least he doesn’t pick late like the rest of the a**holes…

He was, presumably, referring to Michael, Andrew, Brian, et al., who were in attendance at this event.

All this being said, I think his secondary offering is more a function of the economy than the stories swirling about…as far as I know, these stories are confined to those in the wine business and the folks that have seen the thread on this board.

Tony,

We’ve never met and you know I am close friends with your brother. So I will put this in the form of a question:

Beyond having worked for KB in the past, do you have anything personal against Jamie?

I’ve known him for years, quite awhile before he left NY in fact. I’ve never seen the side of him which you are portraying here and find it a bit shocking. It would be like someone attacking your brother Andy and I’d be quick to the defense too. Jamie has always been a really stand up guy!

Gentlemen…I certainly don’t want this too turn into any kind of pissing match. I have heard the above stories, as well as others, from several people not on this board concerning Mr. Kutch. He is not here to defend himself…so let’s let this die right here.

I agree with Bill. I’m certainly NOT in-the-know when it comes to all the players in the CA wine world, but it’s probably best to focus on the wine, not the person.

For this second chance offer, is it a full allocation?

That’s what I was wondering as well. Now I’ll have to wait to go home and see if I got this letter. Part of me hopes I didn’t because if I did, I’ll be forced to buy.
