Kobayashi 2025 Release (and 2024)

Got the mixed case and added some Viognier, Rousanne-Marsanne to make four each of those plus the Cab Franc from the case. I added one Syrah SS, so 2 of those and two regular Syrah.

I have to admit my experience with the 2022 Syrah Sans Soufre was… meh. The comments here and elsewhere made think there was something amiss (not enough decanting/too early, off bottle, bad taster or pairing?) so I added one to the one that came with the case allotment.

I’ve had great experiences with natural wines and am a buyer in general so OK with a flier on this opportunity.

You’re not worthy

I’ve been underwhelmed by the '22 SS over two bottles. Have one more I’m going to let sleep, but it’s the only bottling from them that hasn’t blown me away. Wonder if it’s the vintage or what since the '22 syrah is in this release / haven’t tried it.

I renounced my unbearable stateness of worthy

Email Mario. Last year she hooked up me up when the SS showed as sold out as long as I ordered a case.

I ended up grabbing a SS Syrah and wishlisted another.

Peeps are going to think im crazy, but i Coravin’d some of the viognier…and didnt love it. Gave it some air and everything and it just never shined. I actually disliked it when it was chilled but it was better as it warmed in the glass. I know…flame away! :berserker:

Did you pronounce the grape correctly while in its presence? I’ve heard of Willamette wines shutting down by such a slight in regards to appellation. :upside_down_face:

Nah, I’m with you. Beyond Ch. Grillet, I can count on one hand the Viogniers I’ve enjoyed from any producer, over three decades of trying ‘em. Just not my thing.

I felt exactly the same and mentioned it in another thread, also with 2 bottles of the '22, but the '21 on the other hand… was just wow.

We had the 21 Viognier yesterday and really loved it. A touch round still but a funky menthol or mint note in the nose. Great mouthfeel and luxurious finish. Bravo. Worthy of Zalto Burg stem.

Opened one of these a couple nights ago as well and really enjoyed it. Super aromatic and floral, palate was beautiful – a bit more savory than I was expecting, felt quite structured and a bit austere with the fruit kind of in the background. A couple nights later, the fruit really started to peek out – pear, stonefruit, melon, balanced really well with the savoriness that remained. Dug this wine and happy to have a couple of the '22s heading my way. I really think the Kobayashi whites are the star of the show – every time I’ve tried one, they’ve been really interesting, a little outside the box, and super fun to drink.

Definitely giving next one the MacD Rx: uncork a day before enjoyment.

If it weren’t for the 2021 Syrah Sans Soufre, I’d agree with that statement.

I popped one recently, drank a glass on day one and then the rest two days later. It was perfect! Of course, agree with your MacD strategy as well.

What exactly is the MacD strategy?
We had the M-R from the last release (2022) two nights ago, much better than the bottle a couple of days after arrival this year. These both were good, but 2021 was really good.

Drinking the '21 now

Decanted it for 4-5 hours. It needed it

I’m not great at notes but it really gives me the vibe of a perfect little crostini of herbed goat cheese and a berry jam. Lighter weight and less herbal than I expected

I opened it because I was anxious that the mixed case had 4 bottles of it. Not normally a CF guy

It’s delicious and one of the nicest wine surprises of the year

just wondering but how many of the Kobayashi fan club are non-Washingtonians? I’m a huge fan but trying to gauge my inherent bias….
