Knife storage - to block or not

I just moved into a new house and have limited kitchen counter space to put the knife block…is there any drawback to those magnetic strip things to store knives on the wall?

If you have the right spot the magnetic strips are the shizzle.

At the very least, they need to be in a wood block. Like Dustoff stated, the magnetic strip is the shiznit if you have the space and not little hands around that might grab one.

The countertop blocks are a space-waster for sure. The magnetic strips are great. I don’t have a spot for one, so I use one of these, but if drawer space is limited you’re back to square one.

Bob,

I had to get one of those for my new house and it also works great. Even holds my cleaver.

The magnetic strips cause blade damage unless you are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY careful. They tend to pull the knives in, suck them in, and you get aberrations in the blade when the blade hits. They are quite bad actually. There are knife blocks that mount UNDER the cabinets that are better if you are short on counter space.

I have the magnetic strip and it works great - very convenient, frees up counter space, etc. I haven’t noticed any adverse effect on my Shuns over the past few years [shock.gif] , but I don’t toss them from 4 feet away to see if they’ll stick. [shock.gif]

I have all my knives on three strips… no blocks… don’t mind them… but they take up space and you have to guess which is the right blade

Another vote for mag strips here. Just make sure you mount it high enough so little Jasper doesn’t get to them.

You know how kids are these days. neener

I’m sorry, but I have to call [bullshit.gif] on this one.

But then Zach can’t reach them.

pepsi

sweet, it seems that generally people like the mag strips - I def. have room for it and it’ll be the easiest thing to do. If Jeff is right and you’re all wrong, I’m comin huntin fer ya!

With really dull, nicked knife blades? neener

Zach, just don’t forget to use these or your knives may leave the safety of their abode and dive onto your counter when you least expect it.

sorry, bob, but I call [bullshit.gif] on your [bullshit.gif] . In addition to the points made by jeff, one must be careful to place and remove knives on/off mag strips spine first, otherwise risk damage to the cutting edge.

zach, i’m not saying don’t use the mag strips, i’m just saying be very careful in doing so.

Well Brian, I used magnetic strips for years and mine never sucked anything in nor were they “quite bad”. Sure you have to be a little careful but I’m guessing that Jeff’s experience was with the “Government Isssue Double-Secret Super-Strong Star Wars Covert Insertion” variety of magnet. Mine were normal strength - the kind you’d get at Williams Sonoma.

i agree that the magnets shouldn’t be any stronger than necessary … even blocks aren’t perfect: one has to be careful to not damage the tip by placing the knife in its slot at an angle.

[dance-clap.gif] that’s so wrong [dance-clap.gif]

Mag strip rocks. I must have more common sense than the average bloke because I have been using a magnet for 25 years and have never had any issues with them fracking up my knives

There’s also something like this which is magnetic but doesn’t free up the counter space. It merely allows you to see the actual blades so you don’t need to guess pulling them out of a block. (anyone really need to guess, don’t you store your knives in their own respective slots and have some memory after a while of where each lives?)

Or a “block” like the one below.
