Tonight, 2008 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne Romanee Suchots.
This wine is aromatically wonderful for about 2 minutes and then it is like someone turned on a suction. The palate shows wonderful texture. With air this closes up quickly to me. After about 30 minutes, it is completely closed to me.
FWIW.
BTW, for the 10 minutes or so this was open to some extent, this wine is magical!
the five 2008’s I have had in the last month were all shut down tight.
BTW, I have zero doubt that Keith and others have had open bottles of 08’s. This just has not been my experience with my narrow group of producers. When open, these wines are special.
I had a 2008 Dujac Chambolle this week with high expectations and was pretty disappointed. The nose had flashes of brilliance but it never opened up otherwise (followed over about 2 hours, with wine in the glasses for 45 min. or so before we really went at it). Seemed pretty locked up and a little woody.
I’d be inclined to let these sleep also.
No plans on opening any more '08’s and time soon…
6 year followup. Thinking about opening one soon. Extrapolating from recent 2008 notes reopening and the underlying aromatics originally…
Thoughts?
I opened an '08 Dujac Clos de la Roche last month. I’d hold off on that one. It was pretty shy for the first couple hours but started to open up with significant air. It’s very clearly a special wine–I think Dujac absolutely killed it in '08–but it needs a lot more time.
George Hejna and I had some '08 Cathiard Vosne-Romanee and it was DELISH - that was maybe 3-4 months ago?
