2008 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (3/30/2012)
Beautiful spicy vosne nose is the very first thing that hits. Every single sniff you take in has that spice just tightly integrated into all the high toned red fruit. After 2-3 hours the nose got softer and more delicate, the piercing fruit toned down and gave way to a lusher cool fruit nose. But the palate was tight and relatively unyielding the whole night, high tannin level but had some nice acid. If it wasn’t for the nose I’d say the wine has shut down hard. I definitely think it should not be touched for at least 3-4 years.
Surprised, only 08 I’ve had so far that’s been shut down like this. BOth bottles I’ve had this year have been like that.
Good to know. Although the 08 Dujac Beauxmonts we had last year didn’t seem shut down to me, just super primary. I guess it’s time to let 08s sleep for awhile.
I’m not sure I’ve had a very “open” 08 yet. The Malconsort, MSD, BM, CDLR have all been pretty closed on the palate. This is contrary to some other big name producers I’ve had where their 08’s are showing pretty well at the moment.
The only recent red 08s I’ve tried have been Drouhin’s Cote de Beaune and Bachelet’s Cote de Nuits Villages …the Drouhin I’ve had twice over the last few months, both bottles were quite open and drinking well. The Bachelet, on the other hand, was shut down hard. Definitely time to bury the 08 red burgundies.
Two recently tastes '08s that were excellent, not shut down at all:
Gérard Mugneret
(G is son of René, father of Pascal. Mostly sold in Europe, apparently.)
Vosne-Romanée 2008
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville
Volnay 1er Cru 2008
(this one is known for early maturity vs. their “climat”–if that’s the right term–I mean individual vineyard–Volnay 1ers)
You guys must be opening Cortons or something, if you’re finding them shut down. Finishing an 08 Jadot Ursules that I opened last night and it’s drop dead gorgeous.
If you flip a coin and it’s head 10 times out of 10 it doesn’t mean that every time you flip a coin it’s going to be heads right? Like I said, the only wines I’ve noticed to be shut down is Dujac.
I love the vintage but I am noticing a real change in some of the wines when I pop them so I have stopped. I am now popping a few young 09’s .
I have a pretty good cross section of 08’s. Many more 08’s than 09’s. The really firm ones are the usual suspects… Ponsot, Lafarge etc. I have only the Clos de la Roche from Dujac and only 3 bottles
so I have been hands off of that one.
Even wines like Pousse d’Or made in a “looser” style are firming up however.
I really do adore this vintage in both red and white.
Maybe another try with something like Dennis Bachelet is in order?
BTW, all the Atlanta folks, if you love 08 as I do and need a few more (which I don’t at this point), Atlantic Wine on Roswell has 08 Fourriers of all types sitting there waiting for a home. They looked so lonely I almost bought them
but then I remembered how many bottles of 08 I have. This is an ideal time to pick up some great wine. Prices are really not bad. No affiliation. Just wanting to see them go to a good home.
