We have been fortunate enough to have been able to taste with Jacques Carillon nearly every year for the past decade or so. He is such an unassuming chap and produces some of the greatest white wines of Burgundy. He is always generous and engaging yet doesn’t muck around. We are usually in and out within an hour, having tasted through two vintages of his wines. This year it was the 2023’s from bottle and 2024’s from barrel.
2023 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet: All citrus fruits and citrus blossom. Fine and plump and round when it first hits the mouth and then you feel some tension.
2023 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet: A nose of white flowers and white peach. Good volume and chew ion the mouth. Layered and finishes with bitter citrus freshness.
2023 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières: Relatively shy on the nose but great shape and feel in the mouth. Unctuous through the mid, mineral tension. Balanced and long.
2023 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts: The minerality steps up a level here. Relatively strict for such a fleshy vintage. A huge squeeze of grapefruit and so much elegance and poise. Super intense and long.
2023 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: As is always the case with Carillon’s Bienvenues, you get more of everything but with incredible containment. Spice laden citrus fruits and white peach that have a mineral edge. Silky in the mouth with perfect equilibrium. Finishes with fantastic persistence.
2024 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet: Shows the electricity of the vintage. Very mineral and very fine. Citrus fruits with light florals. Beautiful balance.
2024 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet: Linear and precise with excellent mineral detail. Citrus fruits and blossom. Elegance personified.
2024 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières: Loads of citrus and some white peach. Full and fleshy through the mid-palate. Great mineral drive and outstanding grapefruit cut. Very long and detailed.
2024 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts : Compact and linear. White flowers and orchard fruits. Cool minerality underpins. Such great intensity and length of flavour. There’s so much wine here, but it is under a tight hold.
2024 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: So fine, complex and understated. Oozes saline minerality. Citrus fruit flavours possess incredible intensity of flavour. It is chewy and chalky and super salty on the super long finish.
