So I opened my 1st bottle of the '05 KL Barrel Select Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Cab tonight…not great. It was flawed with funky notes on the nose and a flat horrible palate leading to a clipped finish. Like, mildly steeped garbage water with some cherry leading to a ghost finish. Not what we have come to expect from KL.
So I gave Jefferson Henry a call and left a message on his cell. Within 10 minutes he called me back and I described the situation saying " ave you gotten any calls about this wine? My palate could just be off, but…" He responded with “Your palate is probably fine (might be reaching here…), you just might have gotten a bad bottle. We’ll send you a new one out next week.”

OH, and a side note… the offer letters will go out to the Southern states in the next 2 weeks!!
They are always great with their customers. YOu say the mailer goes out to the southern states in 2 weeks…what about us folks on the Left Coast? I knew it was coming, but wasn’t sure when. Definitely a must buy for me…
Usually it has been a week or two after us Yoni for the mailer. It’s nice to get a bit of a break. And the allocations are usually reserved…
Interesting…a few years ago when I first got into wine, I went to an offline where I met a wino (bunch of you know him on the WS board) who was on the KL list. I had bought a few bottles of bordeaux from him and he gave me a 375ml of the 02? cab. I opened it a few months later with friends and it had very muted fruit. I tried a small pour from a different bottle a few weeks later and realized the bottle was definitely flawed. I emailed the winery and they told me they used good corks and can’t guarantee a wine that was from someone else’s possession. I offered to send them the cork to see if it could be a cork problem but they never got back to me. I told the story to the guy who sold the bordeaux to me and he thought it was funny since it was definitely stored properly.
Unfortunately, that was my only experience with them.

I’m going to flip Ric an email, see if I can swing by and taste the 07 before the mailer drops. I am a big fan of KL and will be going long (by my standards) on this one.
