K&L New York City Location

“K&L Wine Merchants is pleased to announce an expansion into New York in 2026, marking an important milestone in the company’s continued growth.”

The zip code on the job posting is 10016 on the lower east side. (edit: not the lower east side: 10016 is between 26th and 40th east of 5h Avenue; thank you @John_Morris)

Wow! Not that NY is hurting for excellent wine retailers, but nonetheless this is a huge score for wine-loving New Yorkers.

FYI, 10016 is not on the Lower East Side. It’s east Midtown, from 26th to 40th east of Fifth Avenue.

That’s great. Wonder if they will be able to ship to NC from that location? They are one of the few CA retailers that won’t ship here.

Thx .

They used the wrong word “principal vs principle”

Wow awesome news.

Part of what makes K&L so great for me is the integration of supply across the California locations. If I want to put an order together and one bottle is in Hollywood, two at the warehouse, two in Redwood city, and one in SF. I can order it all at one and have the order assembled for pick-up at one store free of charge.

I have to assume this NY location will be at bit of an island, separated from the California locations.

That is very real competition to the large wine stores here.

That’s gotta be a big chuck of change to throw down… best of luck. I think there’s a natural limit how much they can expand though, since most of the value of a K&L shop to wine lovers is not in mass-produced wines.

I’ve noticed that on their bidding page, they are gearing up for NY auctions as well.

Why? Maybe I’m ignorant of the economics of it but I had assumed that they would still consolidate orders across all their locations. I can see it taking longer for NY, and perhaps they will add some sort of order minimum amount, but I don’t see why they couldn’t.

Awesome news!

I don’t think they can do that exactly because they would have to “import” California stock into NY (and vice versa, but NY is probably trickier). That said, there are ways around it which involve extra steps. They’ll probably handle it similarly to Flatiron.

Out of curiosity, how does flatiron handle it? I’ve been interested in getting wines that the NYC store carries out here in SF, but they don’t seem to publicize an inter-store shipping option.

well it is in Manhattan . . . .

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I do know that they are very strategic in what they do - still family owned at this point - and would not make this move if it did not make economic sense right from the get go. My guess is that they are taking over another shop with infrastructure already in place.

With regards to inter-state wine movements, this will be huge IF they can truly transfer wines easily from their CA operations to NY. I’m sure there are many in NY and surrounding states that expect to either pick up at the shop or have items consolidated.

Cheers

It’s been a while, but I think they do often carry duplicate stock in both the SF and NY locations. I also seem to recall occasions where they would have a SF sale for NY where the order would get consolidated in the end. However they do it, any shipment to a NY consumer that doesn’t involve a third party would have to come from their NY warehouse.

As a CA-based K&L customer, this is what I am selfishly most interested in. Will inventory flow freely between NY and CA locations? There’s extremely limited times in the year I’d be willing to have wines shipped cross-country, but if they could be held at a CA location for pickup that would certainly help grease those wheels.

2 NYC locations .

270 Madison Ave is Park Avenue Liquor Shop
