Last night we had our holiday party at Harry’s Bar in London. Nice food, nice enough wine list for non-geeks. Of course I’m “the wine guy” so I got to pick the wines. For the mains, we had a white and two reds - a 2014 “By Clinet” for those who like bigger reds (almost everyone in my office), and a 2011 Jadot Beaune Theurons 1er, more or less for me and anyone who wanted to take a flyer. The By Clinet is what I’d expect. Quite rich and extracted. The Jadot wasn’t earth-shattering, but had a nice nose, some fruit and forest floor, and tons of acidity.
Anyways, I ask one of my analysts which red he’d like and he said neither, as he doesn’t like red; “they are just too rich and heavy for me”. I told him I thought of this Jadot as “a red wine for white wine lovers” as it had all the acidity and none of that heaviness.
His eyes opened wide on the first sip! He’d never had anything like it, and said he saw what I meant about “a red wine for white wine lovers”. He ended up having three glasses!!!
That moment brought me so much joy. A chance to share my passion with someone, and find a way to turn them onto something new. Who knows if it leads anywhere for him, but it was so great to see his reaction and enjoyment. For me, it’s what’s so great about this hobby, and it’s just the best feeling!
