Jeb Dunnuck goes overboard!

Jeb,

Not sure what your day job is, but impressive, comprehensive report on CA Rhone Rangers!

2000 Clos du Caillou Reserve still remains one of the best CDPs that I have ever tasted. Nice note.

Just one more example of how the internet is changing/proliferating wine journalism - whether it is Antonio Galloni’s Piedmont Report that morphed into his assignment at TWA, or Roy Hersh’s For the Love of Port or this recent venture from Jeb (of whom I know nothing more than that he drinks with Rico in Colorado [wink.gif] ), or twenty other guys and gals who I’m forgetting right now, there is no shortage of critics and newly-issued wine literature out there to read.

Mark Pecken brought this to a dinner in Chicago 2 years ago and it instantly became my gold standard for CdP.

Jeb,
Fantastic report. [welldone.gif] [dance-clap.gif] [berserker.gif]

Suns out guns out! Love the report!!!

I am a big fan of Eric Kent and Holus Bolus…I am glad to see they were profiled!

Impressive work!

Wow Jeb. Great report. This is just a fantastic effort. [welldone.gif]

Great Report

Awesome Jeb, it looks like I need to get off my ass!

Certainly looks like a great report and I look forward to spending some time with it. Also, his website is great, with one exception - I didn’t see any place to input my email address so I can be notified when Jeb posts additional reports/notes. Additionally, while Jeb’s mailing address is on the website, I didn’t see his email address listed. For as much time as he has invested in his site, hopefully he will add that functionality. Or, am I just dense and didn’t see it?

Either way, well done.

Thomas . . .

Jeb seems like a good guy and certainly one has to respect the work going into reports like this. If I had one wish, it would be that if Jeb could disconnect a bit from the Robert Parker format and the Robert Parker language in the tasting notes, it would make the work more credible. Also, the natural logic in the scores - high end cuvees always score more than base cuvees etc - makes me suspicious (this always happens over at WA too). It would be interesting to compare the scores from Parker’s 07 Rhone report to Jeb’s report. Anyways, definitely worhwhile to keep his work on the radar screen.

Peter

I saw the mention that Jeb tasted some wines blind, and I know he has discussed blind tastings here as well. I would hope that, in the long run, Jeb would seek to review his tastings in a consistent format (preferably blind).

I do agree with the format switch. Very outdated and copied. At least he did not copy Tanzer’s. Impossible to read.

Nevertheless, it is impressive to see this kind of effort put forth by Jeb.

Thanks for posting this and great work by Jeb.

Back in March, my wife and I had a chance to visit Epoch Wines and meet its owner and his son, Bill and Jack Armstrong and did some barrel tasting. I thought that they had some serious stuff at that time and happy to read that Jeb has confirmed our initial impression.

Ha… Dan, I have to admit I didn’t know what to expect with that title! Thank you very much for the post and link! Oh yeah… day job is software engineer… and I should be working at the moment!

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

Eric, yeah, with a complete site redesign, I’m sure you’re sitting on your ass all day! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out and hope it’s going well for you.

Thomas, the email address is on the bio page under contact info… thanks John. Now that the newsletter is done, I’ll be adding some features to the site… namely, a place to add an email address. Feel free to drop me an email and I’ll add you to the list.

Peter/Dan, love the feedback. With regards to the format, I’m actually closer to Burghounds format on the newsletter layout. For the first one, I tried multiple formats and emailed them to friends and then went with what they thought worked the best. I’m all ears concerning what works and what doesn’t. With regards to the style of the notes, sorry and that’s just the way it comes out and how I think about the wines when I’m tasting them. I try to be consistent with the note layout… sometimes that can make for a boring note but hopefully it’s easier for the reader to figure out what I think of the wine… maybe, maybe not and there’s always room for improvement. A large percentage of the last report was blind… and my Rhone issue came out well in advance of Parker’s so you’re getting nothing but my opinion/thoughts on the wines.

Clem, I really think Epoch is making fantastic juice. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks again everyone.

Wow… this is impressive… thanx to Jeb for all the hard work… and to Dan for posting the link…

Since you got Cedarville on there, one of my favorite hidden gems, maybe take a look at Curtis just outside of Los Olivos next time around…

Jeb

Catchy titles sell…look at all of the hits that I gave you.

Check is in the mail to me?

Good on you for tasting blind, unless this is “whenever possible?”

First number = score; second number = number of wines with that score in this Report. For wines with a range, I went with the number right in the middle of that range (i.e.: 93-95 = 94, for tabulation purposes below). One wine, (Stolpman “L’Avion”) only had a 2 point range (93-94), so I went with “93" for that wine. These numbers are exclusive of the 2000 CdP tasting at the end of the report.

99: 1
98: 0
97: 1
96: 4
95: 12
94: 25
93: 36
92: 34
91: 26
90: 52
89: 42
88: 45
87: 26
86: 8
85: 7
84: 7
83: 2

76: 1

Total wines scored in this report: 329
Average score: 90.17
Median score: 90

Brian, you have even more time on your hands than I do…seriously though, nice work and it yields a nice bell curve.

Thank you for the great report Jeb!
