"Jay Z likes $300 champagne. So he buys the company"

Serious

Always thought Jay Z was overrated, but admit I haven’t listened to much, old or new. My interest in rap is very narrow and partial, mostly limited to Public Enemy, The Roots and Beastie Boys, yes a very distant and white view on rap. Like some of the spacings of Madlib, sad to see how the genre has largely been overrun by commercial interests. The whole gangsta style was always offputting, originally and in later contrived versions.

If the Champagne is anything resembling his current output or public persona I’ll happily abstain.

Then again, who drinks non-RM Champagne?? Ok, I sometimes envy you rich people’s Krug, and my Salon stash is small and shrinking…

Imagine Charlie in the car.

Scarface/Geto Boys are legit. [thumbs-up.gif]

Here’s a shortlist of various gangsta rap tracks I’ve been digging as of late. [berserker.gif]

Tim Dog! Geto Boys! This thread has potential, even if the Champagne does not.

Not a big rap fan, mostly not my cuppa, but I found this one to be interesting:

I’m particularly amused by the Kanye appearance – not sure how this song goes down in the Kardashian household.

BTW, this song was pointed out to me by a good friend who is a music teacher and can play multiple instruments better than most professionals. His “native” instrument is the clarinet – aka licorice stick. He also is a fiend for obscure European classical music – he spent about 30 minutes explaining the wonderfulness of some obscure score he was teaching to the kids in a high-school extra-curricular symphony orchestra that he conducts.

His son, who is 2, is a fiend for Beyonce.

Go on iTunes and download Reasonable Doubt. If that doesn’t change your mind on Jay Z, then there is something wrong. I agree on the newer stuff as he has turned into a “brand”, but his early stuff is insane. This is coming from a person who doesn’t listen to much hip hop at all anymore.

Damn, I always seem to forget to silence that c.

CFu speaks the trooth about Blueprint and Reasonable Doubt. There is much hate to be laid at Hova’s feet for latter day sins, but you can’t mess with those two (and no doubt others); boy has got pedigree for sure.

In Champagne however… not so much. champagne.gif

I worked for Sovereign Brands several years ago. Not sure what the exact business arrangement was, but I can say with a relative degree of certainty that Jay Z was involved from the inception of the Armand de Brignac brand.

Possibly my favorite post of all-time!

His Champagne, like his music, is trash. Built around image and marketing. It finished in the bottom of the tasting with the $32 basic wines. It was a joke of a wine that made the Roederer Brut Premiere seem like a artisanal, hand-crafted wine.

Be that as it may (and it is), he’s married to an incredibly beautiful and talented woman:

To be fair, rap is just spoken word/poetry over backing music. Now, I agree that the vast majority of rap is mindless drivel, and that most of the backing music is computer generated garbage, but occasionally you get artists who elevate the medium and really make you appreciate the power of spoken word.

BFD. So am I but it just makes me lucky.

Best post of the thread goes to Brian!

You old guys [snort.gif]

Sold a bottle of this to a young Asian guy last week. He had these shoes on.

At least his shoes match the bottle.

Mark may enjoy Carlo Rossi or Hurricane more than $300 champs
