Jay S. Miller Right On Top Of That S.A. Wine Market

I think we should have a special forum for the posts about Parker, Miller, Squires.

-Al

Not sure if that is tongue-in-cheek or not, but I can say that one negative result would be that it would actually encourage such posts/threads, and we don’t want that, either.

Use the chatroom for it - nothing ‘sticks’ in there, and only those logged in can see.

I find it very easy to skip over threads that I am not interested in reading.

The title usually gives it away, if not then the first post of the thread.

I have not tried the Falling Star wines. > I received this PR release (by snail mail, of all things) and it struck a chord with me, having just written an Argentina review.

In my tastings leading up to the review, no one showed me any wiines like Falling Star. > I’ve been out of retail for a few years now but even then, none of the vendors from the distributors showed me these types of wine. So maybe I’m naive but I’ve assumed that Argentina consumed these wines at home and saved the higher level wines for export.-JSM

I will let Jay speak for himself. Where is that self-imposed gag order?

So splain this to me…

He openly admits that distributors knowingly keep wines from him? He ASSUMES that the Argentinians keep the plonk and swill for themselves? Way to immerse yourself in your craft and profession.

The title usually gives it away, if not then the first post of the thread.

Sure, let’s put politics into Wine Talk, too. Or any other subject. Your same argument works.

IMO, only a small fraction of the anti- Parker, Miller, Squires, Leve (forgot him before) posts are really Wine Talk, even though some folks want to use the larger platform that Wine Talk provides. These threads are not rare, and they are rarely WIne Talk, so what’s wrong with putting them into a different forum? The people who are interested will still be able to find and read those threads. Why not make the board more efficient as far as categorizing threads appropriately?

Al, while it may be a tad self serving for both Posner and me…and bashing a wee bit, this particular thread is 100 percent relevant to wine talk. It questions the ability of JSM to do his job in an unbiased manner as well as adhere to the standards that have been set forth in TWA. I think that influencing buying patterns for SA wines is well within the realm of wine talk…don’t you?

I post very very rarely and don’t read here that much, but one issue with splitting everything into its own forum is that it’s very hard to navigate and find things plus people never agree on what should be in the high traffic wine talk forum vs in some other place. But then, I don’t have a problem with skipping over things I don’t want to read.

To some degree Parker et all have brought this on themselves with the way they acted on eBob. However, i do think it’s best to get past that and move on. In this specific case though… would Howard etc react the same way if Steve Tanzer made that comment and was called on it? While I don’t think we want to spend tons of time bashing other boards, Parker and the WA are a HUGE influence in the world of wine and with that comes some level of scrutiny and yes, when you say something stupid, ridicule. If Jay was an independent wine blogger we’d never have commented but for better or worse he’s in a position of no little influence. Holding him (or Parker or Squires, etc) to high standards and commenting when he says things like this doesn’t seem off topic for a board about wine.

What has been said about JM in the past week that is substantively different than what was said last week, or the week before? The fundamental points of these threads are generally the same, they are largely filled with posts that contain personal insults, and it’s mostly the same people making the same points over and over, who not surprisingly are people who have had run-ins with the eBob folks in the recent past. Isn’t it time to be honest what these threads are really about and stop pretending they are about informing the public? It took me about five minutes to decide whether JM’s palate was well-aligned to my own. Personally, I give other people the credit to decide for themselves even it they don’t come to the same conclusion.

However, i do think it’s best to get past that and move on.

Absolutely. But haven’t you noticed that it’s become a form of entertainment for some folks? It doesn’t appear they’re interested in getting past and moving on.

So either don’t read them (and roll your eyes) or read the ones that seem, like this, a criticism that’s about wine. There’s a tendency that some have to view any criticism of what a person does as a personal criticism. That’s often in the eye of the beholder though, not something intended by the critic. On other words, I think you’re reading into some of the above posts what’s not necessarily there.

OTOH, I’ve been away from here for months and I simply skip threads that I think are stupid, annoying or otherwise not worth my time.

Al

First, JM=James Molesmorth…JSM=Jay Miller

Second,

we should have about 100 different forums, because every topic is beaten to death on these wine forums, isn’t it?

  1. Bordeaux Pricing
  2. CDP-Vintage of the lifetime talk
  3. California Mailer Arrives
  4. 2004 Burgundies-Are they all green?
  5. Does CA Syrah sell?
  6. Does Mollydooker really suck?
  7. Does Kosta Browne really suck?
  8. Is Parker’s palate shot?
  9. Does the Wine Spectator take bribes for reviews?
  10. When will Bill Landreth take his next 24 hour hiatus?
  11. Porn
  12. Politics

The list could go on and on and on…

Can you show me where Miller has previously bashed a wine without tasting it?

I do not recall…

The best way to answer that is this. When Jeff Leve (who I have met and liked) make attacks on John Gilman on the other board that I thought were inappropriate (ie more personal than just disagreeing with John’s opinion) I commented on that as well and in a similar manner. [Disclosure: I am an original subscriber to A View from the Cellar and bought wine from John when he was a wine broker prior to starting the magazine.]

So, everyone is entitled to an opinion and no one is entitled to question it?

I have gone on wine forums on numerous occasions to offer a dissenting opinion on someone else’s tasting notes…I guess I should stop that.

Yup, I love the Dulce De Leche and the cookies

Hmmm…dulce de leche…

too bad the packaging sucks though: it will never make it to this country [scratch.gif]

I don’t get the criticism in this thread. When Aussie became hot, loads of cheap plonk arrived here to take advantage of that.
he is now saying that with Argentina becoming hot, that the same thing is likely to happen again. It makes sense to me. [scratch.gif]
