Joe never quite forgave Stuart for that review but it was responsible for a lot of Overnoy Poulsard sales. It’s the reason I first tried it and bought bottles semi regularly until it suddenly became an allocated wine.

They now have a dedicated delivery service called GrabDurian for those who don’t want to pollute their cars on the way home (durians are banned on most public transport).

I have to assume that the cars used are used solely for durian delivery . . .

Forget toasty vanillin oak, hedonistic fruit bomb, and all the other descriptors that have frightened me off wines in the past. None of them hold a candle to this review of a JJ Prum wine I saw on a retailer website:


94 POINTS WINE SPECTATOR “($52) Graceful, floral and flavorful, filled with elderflower, melon and star anise notes. This is very harmonious and complex, picking up durian and mineral details midpalate, coming together on the long conclusion. Drink now through 2029.”

If anyone is picking up durian, run away, run far away. That is the stinkiest fruit on the planet and has no business in a tasting note.

Odd, one of my co-workers and I were just talking about durians. He claims that the ones from Eastern Malaysia are the best. I like durians a lot and I assume the note is about the taste, not the smell.

Say what, Danius?? Durian has a smell?? Coulda fooled me!!
I suspect the TN refers to the flavor, as well.

Oh no Tom. This stuff smells like a combo of puke and poop. We were on a bus from Narita airport and a passenger was asked to throw away the durian he was carrying or not ride on the bus. I don’t how he got it as far as the bus.

Stu had gone off my mental radar until this. Thanks for the refresh. I would reminisce about the good old days but am presently enjoying a 2011 Dauvissat La Forest that is not affected by premox. Carpe Chablisien.

I could actually see some odd interpretation of the blend of sponti aromas and sulfur as durian.
