I haven’t spent much time in Mexico. Japan and all of Spain are tops for me.
Our trip continues outside Galicia today and excellent food/wine at great prices continues to abound.

Oh how the tables turn. I remember in the mid-00’s I used to travel to the US just to do shopping and eat, because it was so much cheaper here than in Europe back then. $1.6/EUR helped too.

sad but true. some of my favorite meals (not to mention most affordable) have been in various seafood spots around sweden and norway. love the feskekorka in gothenburg. however there are always exceptions as i have been to quite a few more touristy places recently (ibiza, lake como) where the prices outpaced even nyc or la.

If you find it cheap to eat well in Sweden and Norway, and expensive to eat good in Lake Como, all relative to the US, you’re not doing it right.

You can use a conversion rate of 1/10 with USD to get a sense of the price.
Both the SEK and NOK have been very weak till recently at least on top of that. The Danish Krona is pegged to Euro.
Didn’t think I’d find myself wanting to know the current going rate of a fish lunch in Göteborg, but here we are— the charm of WB sometimes

Yep. When I moved here from London in 2010, I was escaping the most expensive city in the world and LA felt very affordable compared - and the sun was always out! Not sure that’s true anymore (except for the sun part) - I think London is a lot more affordable today compared.
Sweden and especially Norway has always been rather expensive, but in the last 5 years the US has outpaced it by far. Sure, a pair of Levi’s and fuel might still be cheaper here, but almost nothing else.
Old man rant: I just had my mom, sister and niece here and I wanted to show them Disneyland as they’d never experienced the onslaught. Couldn’t find a single ticket below $200/person and that was after the CA Resident discount! Went to Magic Mountain Instead. I shot a commercial for Disney just before Covid, and tickets were $120 then. So it’s almost doubled in 5 years.

Another superb lunch - the small tasting menu of classic dishes of the region plus 2 supplemental dishes, coffees and water for ~$150 pp not including wine. Wine was also a solid bargain off an excellent list.

With all due respect, I feel we may have a divergence on the definition of “fortune” here. That price for lunch (without wine) is really rather expensive for me at least.

Paul - I get it, but this is not a thread about cheap eats and the dining world we live in today is the background context which I think people here understand. I am deliberately listing meals at everywhere from casual tapas bars to high end tasting menu places, which is why I am describing the menus and showing pictures. The quality of menu I just ate at the price is an absolute steal, and I think many people here appreciate the example within the world of fine dining. Sorry if you find the absolute dollar amount disqualifies it. I do not.

I really enjoyed the shellfish buffet at Fiskekrogen in Gothenburg, it was an incredible value considering the number of langoustines that I consumed that afternoon.

unlikely! i appreciate the feedback tho. sweden and norway also have some of the best deals on wine in restaurants especially if you want to drink allocated producers. very curious to hear what you find on your next visit to como tho

It’s quite bizarre sometimes when pedestrian and top notch wines are price about the same.
very true! it is almost feels like a flat bottle fee at some places.
regarding italy, probably my favorite experience last year was in genoa. https://www.trattoriarosmarino.it/
right off the main square but super affordable food and wine. plenty of bottles for ~20 euro that retail for as much or more. bib gourmand rated but certainly a couple of notches above rustic fare. i ate several meals there over the course of a few days and could not get enough. probably the best pesto i have ever tasted.

Eat fine, excellent, truly great food, enjoy a bottle of one of a very wide range of Greek wines, with a glass of half-glass or two before you get to the bottle. Spend ~$150, leave gorged to the gills (or pleasantly full, depending on your definition).
Those who came to the wine dinner there last fall will vouch.
