based on recent TNs? Just curious. Thanks.
We’ll be able to answer that in about 10 more years.
Way over rated, send me anything you have so I can dispose of it safely.
It is very good but I like 1999 and 2010 better.
yes
I like 01 and 08 better also but I still like 06s a lot as well
2001 is more approachable now, but there is no way it is “better” than 2005. 2008? Really? Really?
Tasting 2005 now is almost totally pointless, unless one wants to find a reason to put down the vintage.
Probably closer to 20.
I certainly wouldn’t base any opinion of the vintage on recent TNs! Now is not the time to be opening these. It’s the time to be on the lookout to buy them, from people who got impatient and opened them.
I don’t think '08 is at the level of '05 either, but between '01 and '08 I don’t see how '08 is the one to get the “Really?” treatment. I like '08 lots more than '01.
I really do like the 08s (or at least I did on release). They reminded me a bit of the 01s. We’ll see what happens to them down the road. Mostly I think you are exactly right–really difficult to evaluate 05s now.
Are people trying to be cute? 2005 was an annus mirabilis in Burgundy. Before they shut down, they were the best young wines of my wine-drinking life, which includes the 1999s, 2002s, 2009s, 2010s. Not even particularly close. Concentration, structure, but not overripe. Transparent as hell - every village spoke like Katherine Hepburn. If we get REALLY granular, I might niggle here and there - perhaps 1999 was its equal in Volnay and points south. But if we’re talking about ANY sort of generalization, there is 2005 and then there is everything else. If I had cellar space, I’d buy everything I could get my hands on.
I am a huge fan of '05 reds. I prefer them to '10s and possibly even '99s in the long run.
Boy have we been blessed - 1999, 2005, 2010 and 2012 at the high end. But also, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Plus some really great drinking wines from 2000 and 2007. Then, I think there will be excellent 2003s.
agree
No question in my mind that this is the best vintage in my lifetime, and I started buying burg in the early 80’s. There are a number of other really good vintages, but really no comparison. second probably is 2010, despite the fact that I love 1999.
I’ve been trying burgundy since 88 and yes 05 is the best I’ve ever had. Top to bottom.
Agree, these are the top three vintages, but there is perhaps more upside in some 2005’s.
The will just take more time to show it than the others…
It depends on what you think the reputation is. If you think the reputation is “05 is the greatest vintage ever and easily worth a 2-3x premium over other vintages” then no. If you think the reputation is “05 is a great vintage that will be fascinating to compare with others in the stellar run of 2 decades between '90 and '10” then yes.
In my Gaudichots & Malconsorts-tasting
the single 2005 was the 2nd best wine of the tasting (at least of the younger ones), however still a bit closed after 6 h slow oxy …
If 1999, 2002, 2009/10 or 2005 will eventually be the best vintage remains to be seen (certainly not 2008 or 2001, although they are good), and depends on wine/producer - but it´s certainly a promising vintage, if decade(s) away from maturity, at least for the better Crus.
No burgundy vintage is ever as good or as bad as its reputation.
Some are drinking beautifully without waiting e.g. Fourrier les Cherbaudes 2005, Grivot NSG les Charmois… will further develop of course. Some are closed… Only regret is I did not buy enough when they were decently priced…
