Thanks, that was interesting. I really liked their wines back in the nineties, only to see them succumb to thick layers of new oak and forced extraction after the 1999 vintage. I can see his point of view, however. To each their own.

Wow, 2500 ha of vines. I wonder how much of it is exceptional terroir for making great wine. When you are dealing with that sort of scale, I can see how it would change everything. Still, some companies have been able to maintain smaller, artisanal enclaves within a larger industrial company. If you are going to make wines of “thick layers of new oak and forced extraction” from your exceptional terroirs, I’d question the long-term wisdom of that approach. The wines can always be duplicated by someone else at lower cost, in the long term.
