I wonder, honestly, how much of this wine finds itself to Georgia. I’ve been a serious wine guy probably for the last 30 years or so, and I’ve seen a bottle of La Tache ONCE in the wild maybe 15 years ago. It was priced at $4999. I’ve never seen it on a restaurant wine list in Georgia.
But maybe that’s the Pappy Van Winkle effect - and to your point, not “legit” pricing…
I have a buddy who played ANGC a few months back. He stayed in one of the cabins and had dinner in the clubhouse. He said the wine list is unbelievable and very reasonably priced. Could be the best wine list in America.
And most of what they have isn’t on the list. They only release wines for purchase after what they deem is sufficiently aging them. Down in the cellar they have cases and cases in storage waiting to release. For example, they were only offering the 12 RC when I was there even though they have all the more recent releases.
Honestly, though, as far as their list it’s mostly BDX. Their Burgundy list is nice, but not super deep.
I believe they get an annual allocation. Someone from the club visited the vineyard several years ago and they couldn’t resist having it on the wine list there. Along with French laundry and Union Square Cafe in NYC they are the only restaurants I know of that get annual allocation.
Thread drift – Augusta and maybe others could be the best, but The Barn at Blackberry Farm has to be in the conversation (maybe not that reasonably priced, but it’s an incredible selection). Extra points added for an incredible whisk(e)y collection including some crazy bourbons that are not on their every day list.
