Interesting Cellartracker Red Burgundy Stats

While biding time on an endless conference call this afternoon, I started to review the red Burgundy stats on Cellartracker. The bottom line is that Cellartracker members know their Burgundy. Some interesting facts:

  1. The top 12 wines:
    La Tache (16,000)
    Lambrays (15,000)
    Vogue Musigny (14,000)
Ponsot Clos de la Roche (12,000)
    Mugnier Marechale (11,000)
Comte Armand Clos des Epeneaux (11,000)
    Clos de Tart (10,000)
    Rousseau Chambertin (10,000)
    Angerville Clos des Ducs (9,000)
    Rousseau Clos St. Jacques (9,000)
    DRC Romanee Saint Vivant (9,000)
    Roumier Bonnes Mares (8,000)

Most of these wines are unbelievably tough to acquire at any price. Wow!

  1. The top 12 producers:
    Jadot (63,000)
    DRC (53,000)
    Bouchard (45,000)
    Drouhin (43,000)
    Faiveley (41,000)
    Rousseau (39,000)
    Dujac (36,000)
    Vogue (33,000)
    Roumier (30,000)
    Fourrier (28,000)
    Chevaillon (27,000)
    Mugnier (27,000)

And these producers aren’t exactly the ones you find in your neighborhood wine shop. How often do you see even a single bottle of DRC, Rousseau, Dujac, Vogue, Roumier or Mugnier for sale?

Just when I was starting to feel better about the transition of my cellar from California toward Burgundy. I now realize that most everyone else seems to have figured it out long before me.

Interesting 1st post. Actually most of the bottles aren’t difficult to acquire, you’ll just have to overpay in many instances and some are readily available like the Marechale. While many of these producers aren’t at Total Wine, Bevmo or even some higher end wine stores, they’re around. Best Wines Online has tons of DRC if you want some.

confused. if latache has 16000btls, why isn’t it listed in the top 10 vineyards?

b/c in China, it’s spelled La Cashe… [cheers.gif]

I didn’t use the vineyard stats because the vast majority of wines were listed as “unidentified vineyard”. Presumably that’s where La Tache, Lambrays, etc. fell.

To put this is perspective if you sort by appellation the top wine (La Tache) comes in around number 50.

The appellation list is a little more modest…

Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru 4.4% Bottles (111,569)
Volnay 1er Cru 4.2% Bottles (104,881)
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 3.8% Bottles (94,867)
Chablis 1er Cru 3.3% Bottles (82,601)
Chablis Grand Cru 3.2% Bottles (81,478)
Beaune 1er Cru 3.2% Bottles (79,503)
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 3.1% Bottles (79,031)
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 3.1% Bottles (79,017)
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 3.1% Bottles (78,207)
Gevrey-Chambertin 3.1% Bottles (77,279)
Corton Grand Cru 2.5% Bottles (63,297)
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 2.4% Bottles (60,662)
Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2.4% Bottles (59,894)
Meursault 1er Cru 2.3% Bottles (57,243)
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2.2% Bottles (55,735)
Bourgogne 2.1% Bottles (53,578)
Pommard 1er Cru 2.1% Bottles (52,514)
Meursault 1.9% Bottles (48,600)
Chambolle-Musigny 1.9% Bottles (46,881)

When you think about those top 12 wines it actually makes sense they would be the most widely held because they are some of the higher production individual wines from burgundy. For instance a lot of people own wine from Jadot, Dujac, Fourrier, etc. who make several wines with much lower case totals than wines like La Tache (approx. 2000 cases), Lambrays (approx. 3000 cases), etc.

CT lists La Tache as the appellation, with no vinyard, on the DRCs. That’s why it did not show on Buzzini’s list.

Yes, the appellation is La Tache Grand Cru. I know it’s a vineyard. But it is also its own AOC…

(When I first launched CT these were classified as vineyards, and enough Burgheads whined enough to convince me to change it to the current scheme.)

Interesting stuff Winick. If you’ve got enough time to figure out these stats, you surely have time to get your ass on a flight and get down here to drink neener Sadly enough, I don’t know that I own even one single bottle of Mugnier. I think I need to correct that.

Les Cras? Chambolle?..Nuits? Vougeot? or do we add all together? Including the village tit bits?

(there is even a Beaune, I just did a search)
